The timeing can not be set on it being that it has a timeing belt, It is adjusted when the belt is installed on the engine, There are marks on the engine block
This could be caused by a throttle position sensor, an idle air control valve or a vacuum leak causing too much air to enter the fuel system and the computer compensating by giving it too much fuel. Take it to an auto parts chain store that will run a diagnostic scan for free and see if any codes come up.
when my cars do this I check the fuel supply first.....should be a small filter near the throttle body somewhere that could be prob. then check electric/fuel related items. there are several different items with these symptons, nearly always related to fuel....go to a good websight like autozone repair guide for help....also a haynes or chilton manual available at parts houses will save you lots of bucks----i never take my cars to a garage...this is general info, but i hope it has helped...
My friend it sounds very familiar to a TPS (throtle position sensor). Locate it by the throttle lever on the intake box.Place an ohmmeter on little brute while unplugged set the meter to 100 ohms and manually activate the throttle lever.Should read at 0 closed and 8 to 14 open . If not install a T P S unit.Cheap and readily available at most auto parts stores

found defective part outside throttle body. runs OK now
