Show me how to add transmission fluid - 1992 BMW 5 Series

  • Anonymous Jan 15, 2012

    There is no dipstick!

oh. Then you have to add fluid through a fill plug on the transmission. A little hand type of pump works good. Check at a parts store. So, its a manual transmission?
Fill until it starts coming out of the hole.

Michael Moore? Woot, I get to talk to a celebrity!

Sorry, couldn't help myself, falling over.
You add fluid through the dipstick tube. Use a small funnel. Don't overfill. Check level with engine at normal operating temperature, idling, in park, and on level surface.
Good luck.

Testimonial: "Yes it's a manual transmission. Hoping there was another way other then the fill plug on the side of the transmission, it's so messy. Thanks "

I'd add a half quart at a time until it shows on the dipstick, then add enough to bring it up to where it's supposed to be. Most usually on cars I've had experience with this is accomplished by using a funnel into the dipstick tube and pouring the fluid in that way.

Pt cruiser transmission stick

I would go by the hot reading of the cars transmission fluid. Check while in park and idling, check as you stated on level ground. Wait until the car temperature reaches normal operating temperature then check the fluid, not once but at least two, even three times to make sure your reading is accurate. If it shows a cold reading still then add fluid until it is within the hot reading area/marks. NOTE: be aware that when it says hot meaning the fluid in the transmission is hot, not just the cars motor. So you may want to drive it around to warm it up then come back and park it on a level surface and leave it running. Wait 5 mins or so then go out and check the fluid, again it should read between the hot marks if not, add until it does. Hope this clarifies the proper way to check your transmission fluid.

Car starts goes in gear but want move

check transmission fluid. There should be a dipstick under the hood only if it's automatic. If it's a standard, there is a lot more to checking fluid. If there is nothing showing on your dipstick add some through the dipstick tube. Never add fluid though while car is running in gear as it will take off on you when fluid reaches transmission. Add a liter, check again, then follow the proper way to check the fluid level. The proper way will be written on the dipstick itself. It may say check hot in park, or check in neutral, but never add it like that if there is nothing showing on the dipstick.Let me know how you make out

There really isn't a place to check the fluid level. The only thing you can do is top off the fluid level. In the first picture shows the location of a tube coming up from the transmission. It also shows the plug on it which needs to be replaced if removing it with a new one. The second picture shows the location of the "check plug" on the transmission. The way to top off your fluid level is to remove the check plug and add transmission fluid in that tube until fluid starts to run out of the check plug. That's how you do it on your vehicle. Hope this helps you....

If your transmission fluid shows add, how much should you add?

Hello klb.

You should check your transmission fluid after it has been driven and hot.
Also on level ground and running in park.
The fluid level will rise when it is hot so if you add when cold it may overfill.
So if you are checking hot add about a half quart and recheck.

Thank you for using FixYa.

How do I check the transmission fluid and add transmission fluid to my 1991 toyota camry

Do you have your owners' manual? Check the diagram there to see where the dipstick for the tranny fluid is. You generally have to check the fluid when the engine is hot. You can sometimes get help withe these things at the big box auto stores like Advance Auto. I hope this helps! Ask them to show you how to add the fluid. You could also go to the oil change place and get them to show you that any other crucial check points on your auto.

My 1989 ford f250 belt broke and hit my transmission line relaced the belt and fixed the transmission line but Iam unsure of how much fluid to add ?

I am assuming that you lost a lot of fluid when this happened and that nothing is showing on the transmission fluid stick? If so, add fluid a little bit at a time until you see the fluid show up about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch on the stick. At this point you should be safe to start the vehicle, but have at least one - two quarts of transmission fluid ready to go in when you do so. With it running, add fluid until you get to the "Add" mark or the lower little hole in the stick. Stop and let the engine/transmission warm up to operating temperature. Once at temperature you can now adjust the level to the "Full" mark.

Where does the transmission oil go

If your car has a manual transmission , there won't be a dipstick or filler tube. Oil (fluid) is added through a plug on the top or side of transmission , depending on your vehicle make or model

Can't find where to put automatic transmission fluid

there are two areas where you can add fluid from the front of the vehicle, doesnt matter what kind of car it is, one is for checking the oil the other is for the transmission fluid, but before you add transmission fluid i recommend your flush out the old transmission fluid first so all the grimey old fluid is out and at the same time can notice if any bits of metal are floating around
