I shifted into 4x4 while doing around 30 kmph. it shifted in fine. when i put it back into 2 wd the 4x4 indicator did not turn off. i know it is 2 wheen and it will go back into 4 high and low. how do i get the light to register correctly?
I have seen this issue in some 4x4 vehicles. The issue may be that although you have moved the shift lever, because there is pressure on the axle components, the vehicle has not released the front wheels. After shifting from 4x4 to 2x4, allow the vehicle to move without torque for a few seconds, allowing the components to move into 2x4.

well, if you are sitting still it is recommended you put vehicle in neutral and select 4x4 indicator to desired posistion..... 4 high...4 low...or 2high (auto) when you select 4 low the top speed is not to exceed 25 mph. It is a very low gear for crawling or pulling. At any time you need 4 low gear you must stop trk, shift to neutral and select 4 low. The same procedure is done to change from 4 low to 4 hi or 2 hi. if not done this way internal trans, transfer case or driveline failure will occure. At any time you may shift 4x4 selector from (auto) or 2 hi to 4 hi, and 4 hi to 2 hi or( auto).****** But note, do not make shifts while tires are spinning or under power (acceleration)******* While driving you can make shifts at any speed between 2 hi (auto) and 4 hi and back to 2 hi. release throttle a little and select. you do not have to take foot off throttle all the way! just enough that truck is not under a power, load acceleration. If tires are spinning or you are on the gas and you select gears from 2 & 4 high the posibilities of severe damage can result. Also note that 4x4 is not recommended on dry pavement. When 4x4 is being used also take care as to the handling and the steering characteristics change, On tight turns the front wheels will bind and possibly **** a little. If you have never had a 4x4 before, obey what i have told you untill you get the experiance and you will be fine. HAPPY TRAILS.... AND A LITTLE 4X4 FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can shift between 2Hi and 4Hi when the truck is moving. Just let off the gas and shift it. But in order to shift to Neutral or 4Lo you need to stop the truck and shift the transmission into neutral then shift the transfer case.
If you are following the procedure in the owners manual ( shift into Park or Neutral ) prior to shifting out of 4L, you can try 2 things.
1. Old school back up ~ 30' and then put into park and try shifting out of 4L. This is how it used to be done, and if the transfer case is binding, this can relieve the pressure.
2. If you have an ESOF ( Electronic Shift On the Fly ) 4x4, you can have someone turn the range select switch while tapping on the back of the transfer case with a dead blow hammer ( do not use a metal hammer, could damage the case ). This is to see if the ESOF shift motor is held up.
The truck when into 4L Ok, so I would assume power is to the transfer case, but it could be a contact plate issue, where the truck is trying to shift out, and the contact plate is not signaling the GEM ( Generic Electronic Module ) that the transfer case is in 2WD mode, and unlock the front axle / change the range switch to 2W indicator ).
Pot back what you find out, and if you have a ESOF or MSOF ( Manual / Mechanical Shift On the Fly i.e transfer case lever ).
It is the headlight switch, very common problem on jeeps, my 96 grand cherokee dose the same but most times the lights will flicker. Try spraying a small amount of WD-40 in to the panel dimmer switch and then move it around and kind of jiggle it around.
hey charlie, 1st problem is 4 wheel drive being engaged on dry pavement. You should only have it in 4x4 in snow, or off road on sand, dirt, etc. Newer all wheel drive vehicles compensate for the tires rotating at different speeds, like going around a sharp corner. The wheels on the outside of the turn have a longer distance to travel than the wheels on the inside of the turn. This results in the vehicle feeling like it's jumping, hopping or jerking as you cut a tight turn. You can damage your 4x4 system, as the wheels are fighting each other, trying to turn the same # of rotations, and something can and will give (like blowing the transfer case). If your light is staying on after changing to 2 wd, it is possibly stuck in 4x4. To shift from 4wheel to 2 or 2wheel to 4, you should be traveling in a straight line, let off the gas, change in or out of 4x4, resume driving. 4x4 low range requires a complete stop to engage.
change the Speed sensor on the transmition. On my 99 it would not shift out of first gera when my gas light would turn on. Every time it happened untill i filled it up . I changer the speed sensor and all is fine
start car put it in neutral shift 4x4 lever into 4x4 low then drive a few feet. now shift main trans back to neutral then move 4x4 shifter back to 2wd high for normal driving then shift in drive and drive for a few min light should turn off..if nor disconnect battery for 15 min to reset computer and see if that does it. if that doesnt work you may need 4x4 linkage adjusted ..do you have a lift?
I had the same issue with my 99 sierra push button 4x4..to check the controller motor you can take it out of the side of the transfer case and using a 12v source check it on your own to see if that is what it is. You can also use an ohm meter on the conrtoller. If that checks out..try the Transfercase shift control modual. It really shouldnt matter what speed you are going for 4x4 high....Try to keep it under 80 though
Its weird but I had a fuse blow out awhile back that is the same fuse that works the cab lights when you open the doors. When this fuse went out it also made it shift odd and hard when it did shift. Since it is only intermittent in your case, It may just be a weak fuse.
