2000 BMW 528i wipers stopped working?

My wipers stopped working when driving down the highway. I had to pull over to the shoulder of the road, turn the car off, then start the car back up and then the wipers came back on. Five miles down the road it happened again. I believe I was using the intermittent relay mode. Why would the wipers stop working? VERY SCARRY! What could the problem be?

The wiper relay is a common cause of this failure. It is not very expensive and easy to replace. Search Google to find a replacement and instructions. Use these terms: e39 wiper relay

I had the same issue with my 2000 528i. You more than likely need to have the Vanos seals replaced. BMW will tell you that the Vanos unit needs to be replaced but the problem is more than likely isolated to the OEM seals that shipped with the Vanos. This issue has been reported by several BMW owners. This issue has been thoroughly documented and reported to BMW in an effort to seek a corrective fix. Since BMW failed to address the problem, the guys that investigated the issue started their own company providing superior Vanos seals to the deficient OEM Vanos seals.

The company is Beisan Systems, LLC. I ordered their Vanos seal kit and had them installed at a local BMW performance shop for less than half of what BMW wanted to charge me for a Vanos replacement with the same faulty seals. Besian also provides step-by-step DIY instructions; if you have the time.

Good Luck.

If your talking about what would a dealership change, it generally consists of a tune up, including spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, oil change, pcv valve, and fuel filter. Thats also usually when they want to replace the timing belts. There may be one or two other things specific to BMW, but generally thats what you can expect.

Sounds like you have a small bit of dirt or grit in the fuel system when accelerating it is drawn with enough force to cut off the fuel supply then is released when engine at Idle.
1 run liquid fuel line/injector cleaner in 1 tank
2 check fuel lines for debris
3 change fuel filters
4 have fuel tank flushed
here is trouble shooting order less expense to greater.

It sounds like the water pump is not working. Google your make and model with the words 'water pump repair' after it, if you want to try repair yourself. Otherwise take it to a mechanic you know and trust

The front wipers of my 1998 BMW 528i are not working

Hi angel,

I would recommend first starting with checking the fuse. The fuse for the wipers is located in the glove box. If the fuse checks out ok, I would recommend checking the wiper relay. You will need to remove the passenger microfilter cover under the hood. First remove the filter cover. Then release the tabs holding the delivery tube to the filter housing. The housing lifts up and rotates out out to the side. Under the housing you will find a white plastic cover being held in place with 4 allen bolts. Using a 5mm allen remove the bolts. Once removed, under the cover you will see several control units and fuses and relays. Look for the BROWN relay. That relay is for your wiper/washer system. They do fail after a while. When reassembling the cover. make sure it is seated correctly, if not water can enter the electronics and create problems down the road.

Wiper motor or linkage

Replace the wiper motor on it. Sounds like it's on it's way out due to the fact that it's turning your wipers very slowly.
