The bearings in those old gm products were famous for that. The only way to fix it is to change the bearings, which can be quite a job. It's easier to change the whole steering column if you can find a good used one that has a key.

SOURCE: steering column is loose need instructions how to

If you look under the dash. You will see a support bar with a bolt on each side. This hold column in place. The other connection is where the column sits inside gearbox. The gears could be worn or box is loose.

SOURCE: steer wheel assembly

Hello Kimkaye.
There are three bolts that have come loose and will need to be tightened.
Some special tools will be needed to disassemble in order to access these bolts.
I would recommend a professional to do this job for you as there are many parts and pieces to contend with in this job along with the supplemental restraint system (airbag).

Tilt steering wheel loose 1989 chev truck

Not a fun job sorry!
1) Remove horn button. 2) Remove steering wheel. 3) Remove turn signal/cruise lever and cancel cam. 4) Remove tilt pins with a pin puller(about $10) 5) Tighten the four loose screws that hold tilt mechanism to the column.
Be happy you do not have airbags.

How to tighten 1989 steering column?

There is a u-joint inside the steering column if you have tilt wheel. Which I don't think that I have ever seen a steering column get loose if there is not tilt wheel. If there is not tilt wheel then there are two bolts that hold the steering column up against the bottom side of the dash. You will just need to tighten these two bolts. If you do have tilt wheel, then it is going to require taking the steering column out and replacing the u-joint in the steering column.

Wobbly tilt wheel

Remove horn pad . After removing the large nut SCRIBE A LINE ON THE CENTER SHAFT and the STEERING WHEEL, Using a steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Now comes the tricky part. Remove signal stalk ( just pull out a couple of inches ),and 4-way flasher knob. Disconnect multiple connector of signal switch. Remove 3 screws holing switch down. Gently pull upward on switch to expose lower steering bowl. The large bolts are LOOSE that secure it, so the reason for the wobble. Tighten bolts, and reverse procedure.

Broken tilt steering in a 1991 jeep cherokee

Yes it can be fixed, but it is a pain in the ****, done dozen's of them, hated every one. You are going to have to pull the steering wheel off and then remove the turn signal cam, under that you will find the screws to remove the upper bowl assembly (u will need to unplug turn signal harness at base of column), remove that, under that u will find the bolts for the tilt that have come loose

Looseness in steering column

You can fix it. It's fairly easy, handtools and stearing wheel puller. Theres a bushing that wears out on tilt wheels. The easyest way to tell how to do it is to say, go to your libreay and look it up in their moter manuals. They probaly won't check them out. Butr you can photo copy the pages you need.

Steering column is loose on 97 sunfire. How can i fix it?

You have a tilt steering wheel! This is a problem with most GM tilt wheels. There is 3 or 4 screws you need to have tightened up; which requires tearing down the steering to get to them and put lock tight on them and tighten them back up, so they will not happen again for a long time.
