My drivers side heating component quit working and I'm pretty sure it is the heating element. Does anyone know how to disable the air bag system, i have side air bags, and has anyone replaced a heated seat component? Are there any gotcha's if i do this myself to be aware of?
Thanks
I would get online and check some of the Acura discussion boards as there particular things related to different manufacturers/models/years that can happen if you just disconnect the wiring harnesses and pull the seats. If you want to be safe, disconnect the battery before you disconnect any wiring harnesses going to the seats as the car may take a break in the connection as a problem with the airbag seat sensor and throw a check light error if you don't ( BMWs do this...ask me how I know ! )

You need access to VagCom (the diagnostic software from VW and Audi). You can download it free at www.ross-tech.com, and buy the interface cable for your laptop on eBay for about $20. Or you can pay an hour's labor at a VW/Audi dealer to have them turn off the light.
What probably happened is similar to what happened in my 99 Audi A4. I have side airbags in the seats, and if the front seats are moved all the way back for any reason, it puts tension on the yellow airbag connector under the seat. That pulls it out just enough to open the contact and trip an airbag failure light. What I did was zip-tie the connector tightly (be very careful of the wires, as they're small and you don't want to pinch them), then use VagCom to turn off the light. Using the software is the only way to turn the light off - no ignition cycling or drive cycles, or number of miles driven, nor a battery disconnect, can reset the light.
Use VagCom to find out which airbag is giving you trouble, zip-tie its connector, and have the light turned off. Then you're set.

Your car has second generation airbags and it monitors weight in the passenger seat. If a child sits in the seat the computer looks at the weight and turns off the airbag so not to deploy in a crash. If you put anything in the seat like a purse or briefcase the computer will think its a baby and turn off the airbag.

The wires in the seat heater will burn out if they are left on HI for too long. You can take the seat out of the car, remove the seat covering, and solder some new wires in place of the fried ones. Then put it all back together and hope you don't get a shock in your **** when you flip the switch for the first time. I just did this to my 2000 TL today and it took about 3 hrs to get it all worked out. For step by step instructions go to: http://joshsworld.com/cars/acura-tl-seat-heater-fix/
