Question about 2005 Chevrolet Impala

1 Answer

Why does my 2005 impala leak dexcool like crazy, which throws my heat off.

This all started when i noticed a month ago my dexcool reservoir was empty. i filled it before my yearly trip and had no problems when i got back home where its cold, my heat gave out one morning, and it took 30 minutes to defrost. upon inspection my dexcool reservoir was empty. so i filled it, then in a matter of minutes my belt started slipping. i cant find out why my dexcool is leaking so much, and my radiator fluid remains full any ideas?

There are several areas that these cars have issues with coolant leaks first off is this car leaving a puddle of coolant on the ground?

If not check the oil and make sure after it's been run awhile that the oil doesn't resemble chocolate milk if it does then the coolant is leaking internally and could cause sever internal engine damage if not addressed promtly. The engine damage occours due to pitting and rusting in the lifters rod/main and cam bearings, oil and water don't mix. Check the oil after the engine has been run a while since if the car sit's the oil and water will separate and the oil may look ok other then being overfull slightly.

Another area that is comon for leaks is the overflow tank if this type has the pressure cap on the tank I have had several bad tanks like this.

The water pump may be leaking out the weep hole located behind the pulley and should be checked with a pressure tester, light and a mirror.

But probably the most comon leak of all is the intake gasket leaking out both one or both ends. Dex-cool adds to the likely hood of these gaskets being the problem since it is citrus based and has had huge classaction lawsuits against GM in the past. Since this car is no longer under warranty the best advice I can give you is to flush out the dex-cool and replace with a good quality 150,000 mile 5 year green like Peak antifreeze or equivalant. But first find the laeak and have it repaired.

Also I didn't state it earlier but I guess I just assumed you knew that the reason the heat goes out is that the level of the coolant is so low that the water pump isn't able to pump it any longer and this leads to overheating and further damage. Keep the coolant full always.

And one last thing is if you don't buy premixed coolant then always mix with distilled water since all the ions/minerals are removed in this process and the coolant will protect properly against corrosion and electrolysis.

I have a 2011 Chevrolet impala and my coolant in the reservoir is evaporating within a months time of being filled. What could be the problem? Water pump?

Start with a "professional" coolant system flush. Sounds like there's a blockage somewhere. If you're putting coolant in the resevoir and not directly in the radiator, and it's disapearing, check the radiator. If radiator is full it's a blockage, if it's low/empty there's a leak.

Do you have any dex in your oil? Have u checked all lines from resevoir rubber and metal? Check ****** lines coming from radiator? Is there dex in your ****** fluid? It's gotta be going some where. Some leaks may not show unless you throttle the engine up. Be careful working around belts and fans when engine is running.

It's either leaking or burning the dexcool due to a bad gasket. Check your oil to make sure the coolant isn't leaking into the oil. If it is STOP driving it and have it towed to a shop. Coolant in your oil can destroy your engine.

Stopleak can work. But if the mechanic that installed the parts were to use a Radiator pressure tester, he would easily find the leak and fix it correctly. If this leaks after he worked on it, he still has work to finish.

Car is using water

Better have it checked for a possible headgasket leak. This can destroy an engine!!! (They can leak coolant into the engine oil)

Check the engine oil for a yellow sludge you should see it on the dip stick. If its just oil then it could be your oil cooler leaking oil into the water system.Or the only other thing that would cause this sludge in your water is the head gasket.

1998 cadillac catera anti-freeze leak

First things first don't use Dexcool.

It would happen only once in a while likely because the overflow bottle doesn't always fill to the point of where the leak is located. It would be very easy to unbolt the bottle and fill it with water to find the leak and patch it up.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee leaking coolant and power steering fluid

Just a heads up, $10 bucks will buy you a seal kit for the P.S. pump. I topped mine off for a couple months, then the oring on the high pressure line (from pump, front center) blew and dumped the reservoir in a matter of miles.

The line can be a stinker to get off, recommend driving the car for a few minutes to heat up the pump a little. Don't forget the 20MM wrench.
