This could be a blockage in the carburator, try to clean it, especially the valves. There is a specific spray for the job on the market. You might need to dismantle it.
Quickly check for any manifold leaks and in the vacuum tubes and pipes that go into it. Next check out the Idle Air Control valve on your throttle body. This device has an electrical supply that is fed by the ECU when the the engine is at idle. The IAC opens and bleeds a regulated amount of air past the closed throttle plate to allow the engine to keep running. However if the ports, that allow the air past, become blocked or the valve becomes gummed closed then the engine will idle OK until there is a power demand made such engaging the power steering or shifting into gear.
You will need to remove the air ducting to the throttle body. Take some carburettor choke cleaner and a cloth and spray in the inlet port in the interior wall of the throttle body, lift the throttle plate and spray in the exit port. Spray, brush and wipe until clean. Disconnect the IAC and unbolt it. Spray and wipe the bullet shaped valve until like new. Remount the IAC, reconnect the connector and reinstall the air ducting. That should fix it
Try disconnecting the alternator for a few minutes. It can run on just the battery that long. It is possible the new alternator is producing too many spikes that disrupt the car's electronics.
I have the same problem on my 95 grand cherokee laredo. Sometimes it starts out fine and after about 10 miles it starts spitting and sputtering. Then after a while it seems to clean out and run fine again for a little while. Then other times it starts out spitting and sputtering at the begining. I changed the fuel filter and that was not it. It is a 4.0L 6cyc. Any Ideas?
Hi! I had the same problem with my 88 2.8 Ltr. Had dirty fuel Injectors. Put in fuel Inj. cleaner in gas tank, after a couple of days, runs like a dream,no more problems. Give it a try. Take care,Leo B. [email protected]
check the catalytic converter to see if it has restricted flow, i have had the same problem in the past with a car, it would start and idle great, i could rev the car up but the minute i put it in gear it wanted to die, and my cat was clogged
