When you first start car temp light and gauge are on after about 5 min. starts running rough and idles low trying to die it acts like running hot but radiator cap says not. the check engine light goes on and off as it pleases. when stopping at light or slowing down to turn or accelerate it dies or tries to. if you press down ******* gas when its trying to die it will quit. when you try to start after itdies it backfires and has blown out the muffler. it has decreased fuel mileage. before all this car was running great we put a new ac compressor in it when we did thats when temp gauge said car was running hot gauge stays there and never moves. we took new compressor off and old one back on but it stayed the same. we have changed fuel pump, temp censors, throttle and one coil pack speedometer is also about 20 mph off and the radio quit working. dont know what else to do please help
Take it to a qualified repair shop ! Obviously you don't have the knowledge or tools to diagnose a problem like this . So do yourself a favor an save yourself some aggravation , I could tell you some thing's that it mite be . That would only be a guess on my part , without doing proper testing . Would you replace more parts if i said it was this or that ? That isn't the right way to diagnose an repair vehicles .

i have had two of these problems both on grand prix's , both turned out to be a mass air flow meter. but nethier set a code for the sensor.

Dummy lights. I found that if the tire pressure low light reset button on a 1997 Pont grand prix is located under the steering dash. The button is yellow. Just push it in for 5 seconds and it will reset the indicator light.
If you have a engine service soon light on and the vehicle stalls often. Replace the MAF sensor. It runs about $250.00 from Auto Zone. They will credit back or pay back $92.00 for the old MAF part taken out. This will allow your 1997 Pont grand prix to run without idle problems and stalling issues.

It sounds like to me you are having problems with your fuel injectors. In situations like these there are soooooo many different variables and possible problems, but the fact that the car is backfiring makes me believe that you are getting too much fuel in because that is what makes are car backfire. When fuel makes it to the cat converter or muffler it will burn there and cause the backfire. My suggestion would be to start the process of elimination with a good fuel injector cleaner. The only one that recommend is called Greased Lightening and can be purchased at Napa and O'Reilley auto parts. If you don't have one of these near you I would go with Techron. Let me know if I can help you with anything else. Thanks for letting me help you with your problem and I would appreciate an honest rating on the help that I gave you. Thanks for using FixYa!

your engine needs to re-learn its idle parameters. disconnect your battery for a minute or two, then reconnect and start vehicle and apply park brake and put it in drive. let it run for 10mins then shut it down and wait another minute and start it again and let run 5 mins. that should do it.
