I have a 2001 duramax that blows cold air from heater when at idle.

The blend door motors have been changed. The thermostats have been changed. The coolant sytem has been flushed. Shows no signs of headgasket problems. there are no overheating issues. When you step on the gas it immediately starts blowing hot air but when you let off the gas it goes cold.

It is possible your heater core is blocked need to remove the two heater core lines one should be coming from the front of the block the outher from the cooler .take a water hose and run water into one of the hoses in tell water runs out the outher hose if not passing through ezely with out restriction it is ok if it don't and just a small amount comes out and it trys to come back out the way it is going in it is plug up. what happens when your at idle and it is blocked not allowing coolent to pass through in tell your rpm goes up to were it starts to forcing the coolent through giving you a little bit of heat as soon as it goes back to idle pressure goes down can you lose heat again

SOURCE: 1996 vw vr6 engine coolant leak in front of engine

A blown head gasket doesn't necessarily mean there is water in the oil. Check for bubbles coming into the coolant tank. Take car for a short drive to build up coolant pressure and you should be able to see where it is leaking from a bit easier. It is possibly coming from a heater pipe or core plug.

SOURCE: engine overheating

The coolant flush on radiator doesn't do any good. Since you have changed all the key components and still gotten overheated, then the root cause of the problem is the radiator. It got clogged up in small tubes blocking coolant flow. No matter how good the water pump is working but the radiator got clogged up, coolant is not circulating therefore the heat from the engine can't be dissipated to the radiator. Replace your radiator, don't even think about rebuild it. It has been used for 11 years. Make sure to have the correct coolant/water ratio to keep radiator life for years. Good luck.

Testimonial: "Thanks, it was the radiator afterall. They claim hose was attached too tight; caused it to chip. I think I was taken for a ride by AAMCO & Valvoline."

The heater kicks on but only blows cold air

Air Temperature Control Blend Door Failure No Heat or no AC (dependes on where door sticks)

In all modern cars there is a tiny DC electric motor driven gear drive that moves a plastic door that blends heated and cooled air from the AC and the heater core, this is called (interestedly enough) the air temperature control blend door actuator. The motor that moves this door fails because the door starts sticking from warping, most common complaint is no heat but it can be no AC as well. To replace these parts (blend door and blend door actuator) you must remove the entire dash from the car. Always have this problem confirmed by a dealer or qualified repair shop as it is a very expensive repair.

Other causes of no heat in the cabin are engine thermostats that are stuck open (engine runs cold) or air bubbles in the cooling system.

Heater blows cold air

Heater core could be blocked up, or the blend door is stuck on the cold side of the a/c evaporator or the blend door is stuck in the cold position.

Heater blowing cold air changed thermostat still cold temperature up to normal but heater still cold

you have a blend door actuator that may be bad. Its a little motor that can be a bear to swap out. Unless your pretty mechanically inclined and have the right tools you may want a shop to diagnose this to be sure.

Heater

Likely it has more to do with the door that controlls the airflow. Which should be operated by vacum might check and make sure all thevacum lines are plugged in.

Does the gauge in the car show it warms up?
