SOURCE: is it right or left

right hand thread, very rare to find any left hand threads since the 50s- 60s( left side bicycle pedals are one of the exceptions)

Harmonic balancer bolt on 2001 impala

Looking at the front of the engine, the harmonic balancer turns clockwise when running. You will need to turn the bolt anti clockwise as it is a normal right hand thread.

Harmonic balancer bolt thread direction

It will be a normal RH thread but TREMENDOUSLY tight, and maybe with Loctite as well. You should use a powerful rattle gun (impact wrench) to get it off.

How do you remove the harmonic balancer on a 1987 GMC R3500 with a 454?

You remove the giant bolt, then you use a harmonic balancer puller, which essentially bolts up rather than using claws to grab. The bolts of the puller go into the pulley fastening bolt holes.

Something must happen to protect the crank threads, a spacer, using the retainer bolt, or whatever, just do not kill the threads.
