You might try a new thermostat. Look at oil dipstick for milky color or signs of coolant in oil (a bad headgasket). Have you been losing, adding coolant? I would have a compression test done to verify if headgasket is good.

I have water in my oil

This is the sign of a blown head gasket.
Since we don't know what caused the overheating in the first place, a crate motor, in the long run, may be the most cost effective means of resolving this issue.
If you are mechanically inclined, this may be an opportunity to teach your son how to clean up after his mess.

My 17-year old son asserts that his '99 Sunbird (112K miles) broke down several days ago causing him to pull off the road - no additional details - after which he restarted the car and drove home. Next...

If the timing belt (chain ) broke or jumped the car would not have restarted after your son shut the engine off. (The motor would have stopped on it's own.) Timing belts are an issue with most modern cars and if the motor is what is referred to as an interference engine there will be valve damage. The other possibility is that some components from the butterfly valves in intake manifold were sucked into the cylinder head causing damage to the cylinders , pistons and valves. No matter what the cause its going to cost a lot to repair.

The heat/vent/defrost control panel does not respond consistently. Specifically, pressing any of the buttons that is supposed to direct the airflow to heat/vent/defrost ports does nothing (the light for...

Check the actuator motor and rods on the heater box inside. The motor moves the doors in the heater to direct the heat to the area you request. It is a small motor on the driver side or in front of the heater above the dash.

My son has a 2000 saturn sl2 it quit ecelerating he shut it off and would not start again the timing chain and pistons all work when manually turned. We have changed the starter and have check the...

Does the starter motor turn the engine over but you do not get any ignition (the engine fails to fire). Sudden poor acceleration and failure to start point to an electrical problem. Take out the plugs and check the spark quality on each one in turn. Bad spark means bad coil(s). If sparks are good then the timing is maybe wrong and this then points to either the crank sensor or the cam sensor as at fault. At 10 years or 100,000 miles it is worth changing these sensors anyway as they are prone to fail with age and heat. Next clean the throttle body interior thoroughly. Check all vacuum hoses for leaks.

one thing with fords, the catalic convertor plugs up and it over heats the motor and runs very poor and burns more fuel than the fuel station it self. you get a check engine at all?? or loss of power? burns alot of fuel? check your fan clutch/motor too
let me tell you what over heats an engine.
1 bad radiator
2 bad water pump
3 seized termostat
4 bad heads
5 plugges catalic convertor
6 engine fan not kicking in on time or at all.
