Take out and look for carbon accumulated on the plug points, you
could have worn piston rings. If the points are new and it started fine
but after a few hundred miles the poor-start condition returned, then
look at the plugs again. If they are now carboned up, then either the fuel
is wrong, too heavy of loads were pulled, or the rings are worn and need replacing.

Why does it take a vehicle 3 times to start and then starts normally

you could have a slow leak in your fuel pump to where it leaks back into the tank at night......so there is no fuel present in the morning and has to wait for the fuel pump to bring it from the tank, while you are cranking the engine because it slowly leaked out/back during the night.and since it is 13yrs old...that does not seem unlikely at that age.

Replace the battery it has a bad cell. When you got it started the vehicle charged it long enough so it would start for your mechanic. But it needs a battery.

Hard to start in the morning

Either your fuel pressure regulator or your fuel pump itself is bleeding off.Try cycling the key in the morning on and off 3 times to see if the truck starts easier.
