I have a 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL. It has had all the recall work done by the dealer, and I am the only owner. New (recall) engine has 16,000 miles on it. Problem started about a week ago when I couldn't get it to go into park all the way and I had to finagle things to get it into park and get my key out of the ignition. It "died" last night & had to be towed home. It would go into gear, but would not accelerate in gear. (Will rev in neutral & park, when it will go into park.) This morning, it started right away & I got it to accelerate while I drove it around the court, but after it ran for a few mins, it wouldn't accelerate any more. Once I turned it off, it wouldn't start again, just ticked when I turned the key. Just sitting now w/the battery disconnected b/c I know that will reset the computer. It also makes a metallic-sounding flutter when it's put into reverse, and when it's put into drive, that sound is accompanied by a rubber-sounding flapping that sounds like it's coming from under the car. (the metallic sound is coming from near the alternator, which was replaced in 2005.) Does this make sense to anyone?? Please help me figure this out b/c I am job-free at the moment, my husband's hours have been cut & money is really, really tight. I DO know a little about cars, as I rebuilt my 1970 Opel GT with my dad when I was younger...Thanks so much!!! Tammy :-)I have a 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL. My 2003 Nissan Altima had the same problem. It also felt like it was slipping when shifting at high RPMs between 3rd and 4th and between 4th and 5th. 6 months later, the transmission siezed up in third gear. It would not go into first or second gear. It would take off in third gear and then shift to 4rth and 5th. Reverse did not work either (it felt like it was in park because I couldn't even push it back. I got the transmission rebuilt and a week later the problems started again. Even the mechanic that replaced it is baffled and I can see the frustration in his face every time I take the car back. He finally took the whold thing apart again only to find nothing wrong with any of the parts. I can bet that a sensor that costs less than a $100 bucks can fix the issue, but the problem is that the computer isn't giving any codes. My 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5 automatic transmission has a intermittent rough shift between 1st and 2nd gears. A mechanic change the transmission fluid becuase he said it was low, but he said there was no leak in it. It worked for one day and then it started rough shifting again from 1st into 2nd gear. There is no check engine light on at all. My 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5 automatic transmission has a intermittent rough shift between 1st and 2nd gears. Probably sensors! I have already replaced the crankshaft positioning sensor once, nissan replaced it once under recall and now it is bad again! Plus my speed sensor is bad too! Go to any part store and get diagnostic test ran, it will tell what sensors are bad.

obviously refers to auto trans , could just need the trans fluid level topping up or even changing , if this does'nt resolve the problem then a more in depth diagnosis would be required at a repair shop as could be the ECU for example but do the fluid checks and go from ther ,keep me posted
The transmission is failing here, you need a transmission repair shop tech to drive this and give you the finale word but i think you will need a transmission rebuild.
on automatic transmissions Ok,1st check the transmission fluid level if low or if any at all, 2nd you might check your trans shift solenoids, or the wiring to the solenoids verify which solenoid you might need to replace by google it can show you a location of the 2nd and 3rd. If this doesn't cover the issue the next step is a tech to work on the transmission cause it could be and internal issue.
This can be caused by a sticky solenoid which is not a huge or expensive part but is a pain to change, you need to get the car plugged into a live scanner for the auto where it can be driven while the fault is being observed, this way they can determine which solenoid is at fault.
check and replace filter and fluids just like oil it tends to burn up and blacking and needs to be changed and flushed checking your tranny fluid it should be a red color not a dark red or with a black tint
it has a problem with the second gear drum it cracks and does not fully engauge the n shifts to 3rd ..many honda owners also learn the 8 bucks a quart is the only fluid to pour in a honda..but remember 3 qaurts per drain and fill the tranny holds 7q ....it will take a case to do a drain flush...a high pressure flush will ruin a automatic tranny with alot of miles or metal deposits floating around inside..DRAIN AND FILL 3 QUARTS AT A TIME NO GASKET NEEDED ITS BUILT AND DESIGNED LIKE A MANUAL TRANNY
