It wouldnt be the spark plugs.. It would be doing it all the time if you had a mis-fire. It sounds more like your torque convertor going bad, or your shift solenoid.

On a 2000 ram 1500 rear wheel drive above 45 mph the od doesn't work

Yes an electrical problem should set a trouble code in the engine or body computer.
It could be a pressure problem inside the transmission.

The rpms are too high, is this normal when driving 70 mph and rpms are at 2500

if you had 4:10 gears in the rear axle maybe. but i,d say your over drive is out. your truck should be running at about 2100 rpms or a little less at 70.

1996 2500 diesel auto transmisssion, auto shifting while on road

sounds like trans has gone bad, last service of filter and fluid? clogged screen or low/burnt fluid would effest but if clunking sounds like trans is shot

97 Ram 1500 over revving until hitting 45 mpm

It sounds more like a cable or linkage sticking, and yes it is transmission related, sort of, just because of the high RPM before shifting. Spray all your cables good with lube, at throttle linkage, and get under and look where cable & linkages are at side of transmission, and spray them good too, and work them back & forth, to try & loosen them up. Truck shut off & in park when under it eh.!
Then work shifter back & forth, gas pedal to floor & up etc, to try & loosen things up. That may just cure your problem.
