Refrigerant gets added to the "low side" AC line. It will have a cap on it resembling a tire valve cap. I'm assuming you are not getting chilled air. Don't attempt to add refrigerant if there is no air (hot or cold) coming from the vents. This would indicate a different problem (condenser or compressor) and overfilling the system will do damage. To add the refrigerant, turn the car on with the AC setting at MAX. Then attach the hose to the can of refrigerant and attach the other end to the low side line. Then turn the screw on the top of the hose (near the refrigerant can) to puncture the seal and allow the refrigerant to be sucked into the system. Shake the can gently while it empties. Once empty, remove the hose from the low side line and check the air coming from the vents.
Refrigerant is part of the A/C system. You should have special guages to add it to the system to prevent overcharging. There are do it yourself cans available at many stores but it is highly recommended that it be done professionally. If your system needs refrigerant added to it then there is a leak somewhere in the system.
