Remove the plastic cover held on by two 10mm hexbolts. Slide cover forward (dont try to lift up).
Below the Power Steering pump is a pulley. This is the belt tensioner. With a 12mm box-end wrench, loosen pulley bolt.
There is a 12mm bolt that extends from the pulley at a right angle. Turn this bolt counter-clockwise to loosen, and clockwise to tighten. Make sure you loosen the belt enough to easily slip it off the alternator pulley. Put on new belt and reverse disassembly process.

Park your Subaru on a level surface and open the hood.

Disconnect the ground (black) battery cable using a wrench. This will prevent the cooling fan from activating.

Locate the serpentine belt
routing diagram in your engine compartment and compare it to the actual
routing of the installed belt. Make sure the routing on the label
matches the actual routing. If they do not match or there is no label,
note the actual routing on a piece of paper for later reference.

Locate the belt tensioner pulley
on your Subaru model. If the tensioner is equipped with a squared hole,
use a large breaker bar with a 1/2-inch (13 mm) drive. Otherwise, use a
ratchet and socket of the proper size on the tensioner pulley center
bolt.

Rotate the tensioner pulley away from the belt to release the belt tension.

Pull the belt off of one of the
pulleys and slowly release the tensioner pulley back into position. Do
not let the tensioner pulley snap back or you may damage an internal
component.

Finish removing the serpentine belt from the rest of the pulleys and the engine compartment.
Installing the New Serpentine Belt

Match the old belt to the new
one and make sure they are of the same length and configuration. It is
normal for the new belt to be slightly shorter since the old one has
been stretched through use.

Route the new serpentine belt
through all of the pulleys except the tensioner pulley. Use the diagram
on the engine compartment or your notes, as a reference, to properly
route the belt.

Insert the large breaker bar into the square hole or the ratchet and socket into the tensioner pulley center bolt.
4
Rotate the tensioner pulley in the same direction you did to release the belt tension.
5
Slide the serpentine belt onto the tensioner pulley.
6
Release the tensioner pulley back into position.

Look at all the pulleys and make
sure the serpentine belt is properly seated on each one. Otherwise,
release the belt tension and adjust the belt.
8
Connect the ground (black) battery cable using the wrench.

It has been done before. There are change-over kits available from multiple sources. Google: Subaru SVX manual transmission conversion (or something like that). There is an outfit called Small Car something. They put Subaru powerplants in VW Vanagons...

hi if the check engine light comes on i would start by changing fuel filter or fuel pump, however sometimes sensors dont trigger the check engine light and if it doesnt come on i would pull out the cam and crank sensors and clean them as they maybe dirty and causing the spark to die randomly

its your harmonic balancer pulley going bad. this pulley is made in 2 parts and a rubber seal. the rubber part goes bad and thus causing the pulley to slip. which in turn doesnt turn you pwer steering and alternator. with having no alternator working your dash lights up. not buy a new pulley from subaru. there 200.00, can go bad any time, weighs about 10lbs. get one from ebay. theres lots of seller that are selling it from 40 to 100.00, and only weigh about 1lb.
