Lift the front of your Ford F-250 off of the ground using a jack and jack stands. Remove the wheels from the Ford with a lug nut wrench to prepare the truck for servicing. 2 Open the hood on the engine compartment and take the lid off of the master cylinder that bolts to the brake assister on the driver's side firewall.3 Remove the hex-head bolts on the back of the brake caliper with a socket. With the bolts removed, pull the caliper off of the Ford's brake rotor.4 Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper and discard them. Squeeze the brake piston back into the backside brake caliper with pliers, and then insert the new pads into the brake caliper.5 Pull the rotor cap cover off the middle of the rotor with a screwdriver and use a socket to remove the nut located behind the cover.6 Pull the rotor off of the wheel spindle.7 Remove the old wheel bearings from the brake rotor and insert them into the new rotor. If the old wheel bearings are worn, replace them with new bearings.8 Slide the new rotor onto the wheel spindle and secure it using a bolt and socket. After you tighten the bolt, press the cover back onto the rotor.9 Place the caliper on the rotor and secure it with a socket and hex-head bolts. 10 Duplicate the process on the passenger side of the F-250. 11 Close the master cylinder after putting the wheels back on the Ford and lowering it to the ground. Press on the brake pedal to seat the pads against the rotor
Replace the F-250's Rear Brakes 1 lift the rear of the Ford F-250 off the ground with a jack and jack stands. Secure the new shoes with the springs.6 Pound the brake drum onto the axle hub with a rubber mallet.7 Duplicate the process on the passenger side of the Ford.8 Put the wheels back on the F-250, lower it to the ground and, then press on the brake pedal to seat the shoes against the brake drum.

Your description sounds like the brakes are WAY out of adjustment. The brake cylinders need the shoes to hit the drum or they will do exactly what you describe. I always adjust the shoes until they lock the wheel, then back off until the wheel spins freely, usually 8 to 20 clicks.

How do i take off the brake drums on a 2003 chevy cavalier

After you remove the tire, the drim should slide off. If it doesn't then try using a rubber mallet and gently tap on the outside edge as you pull on it. Sometimes you also need to tap on the drum in the center part. I have sprayed penetrating lubes like WD-40 or PB Blaster into the seam at the center. You may also have to back off the parking brake cable or even use the adjuster to back off the shoes.

I have a slow brake fluid leak. When i baby the brakes and drive very conservative they(brakes) will go a couple months without needing fluid. Is this an expensive repair?

Depends on what is leaking. I would pull the rear drums and see if the wheel cylinders are leaking. If they are by this point they have saturated the brake shoes. If you would have replaced them sooner that the shoes may have been salvaged saving you a couple of dollars.

Either way you need to find out whats leaking. Brakes are nothing to let slide. Little issues can become big and serious issues in the blink of an eye. If you're not sure what to look for most places will do free brake inspections and give you an estimate for repairs. You can then decide if the repairs are resonable and have them fix them or if you want to tackle it your self.

How to remove rear brake shoes

How to Replace Brake Shoes
(DIY Complexity: Moderate / DIY Time: 3.2 hours)

Parts:

4. Mallet Hammer
5. Brake Spring Tool
6. Flat Head Screwdriver
7. Needle Nose Pliers
8. Tire Iron
9. Brake Resetting Gauge

Supplies:
1. Brake Cleaner

Steps:
Step 1 * Secure your vehicle on a level surface, making sure your car will not roll or lean when jacked up.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 * Break the lug nuts loose but do not remove. Lift up your vehicle using a floor jack.
o Tip: Using an aftermarket floor jack, instead of the original equipment (OE) jack, can make the job easier and safer. Verify the condition of the floor jack before use.

o Tip: Lug nuts fasten the wheel to the hub and may be on very tight. To gain more leverage, use a breaker bar to loosen the nuts.

Step 3 * Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.

Step 4 * Remove the lug nuts. Remove the wheels.
o Tip: Make sure the parking brake is released before removing the brake drum.

Step 5 * Remove the brake drum. If necessary, back off the star wheel adjuster.
o Tip: Hit the brake drum with a rubber mallet to break it loose from a rusted hub.

Step 6 * Clean the brake assembly using a“wet wipe method”. This method uses a spray bottle with water and detergent. Do not use compressed air to clean the brakes. Inspect the brake shoes for wear or damage.
o Tip: It is a good idea to leave one side assembled to use as a reference while you work on the other side.

Step 7 * Remove the primary and secondary brake shoe return springs from the anchor pin and brake shoes.
o Tip: The primary spring is connected to the front (primary) brake shoe and the secondary spring is connected to the rear (secondary) brake shoe.

Step 8 * Remove the adjuster cable and spring assembly. Remove the star adjusting screw and thread the adjuster all the way in.

Step 9 * Remove the front brake shoe retainer. Remove the front brake shoe and parking brake link.

Step 10 * Remove the parking brake lever from the rear brake shoe. Remove the rear brake shoe retainer and remove the rear brake shoe.
o Tip: Specialty brake tools are available to make brake shoe removal easier; but it is possible to remove the brake components with pliers.
o Tip: While you have the drum brake assembly apart, pry the outer seal away from the wheel cylinder and check for leaking brake fluid. If any brake fluid is leaking, replace or rebuild the wheel cylinder

Step 11 * Apply white lithium grease to the backing plate contact points.

Step 12 * Install the new brake shoes in the reverse order of removal. Be careful to keep the new brake shoes clean.

Step 13 * Inspect the brake drum and resurface or replace if necessary. Install the brake drum and adjust the brake shoes.
o Tip: There is a slot on the back of the backing plate usually blocked with a rubber grommet. To adjust the brakes, insert a screw driver into the slot and turn the star wheel adjuster. Spin the brake drum and stop adjusting when you feel a slight drag.

Step 14 * Install the wheels. Torque lug nuts to manufacturer’s specifications.

Step 15 * Lower vehicle and test drive to verify repairs.

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .

How to install rear brakeshoes

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
If you are not thoroughly familiar with the procedures involved in brake replacement, only disassemble and assemble one side at a time, leaving the other wheel intact as a reference.
1983-88 Vehicles
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
  1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle with jackstands.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drum, as outlined earlier in this section.
  4. Place Brake Cylinder Clamp D81L-1103-B or equivalent, over the ends of the brake cylinder.
CAUTIONBe careful that the springs do not slip off the tool during removal, as they could cause personal injury.
  1. Remove the shoe-to-anchor springs, using Brake Shoe R and R Spring BT-11, or equivalent, then unhook the cable eye from the anchor pin.

  1. Remove the shoe guide (anchor pin) plate.
  2. Remove the shoe hold-down springs, shoes, adjusting screws, pivot nut, socket and automatic adjustment parts.
  3. Remove the parking brake link, spring and retainer. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  4. After removing the secondary brake shoe, disassembly the parking brake lever from the shoe by removing the retaining clip and spring washer.

  1. The brake cable must be connected to the secondary brake shoe before the shoe is installed on the backing plate. To do this, first transfer the parking brake lever from the old secondary shoe to the new one. This is accomplished by spreading the bottom of the horseshoe clip and disengaging the lever. Position the lever on the new secondary shoe and install the spring washer and the horseshoe clip. Close the bottom of the clip after installing it. Grasp the metal tip of the parking brake cable with a pair of pliers. Position a pair of side cutter pliers on the end of the cable coil spring, and using the plier as a fulcrum, pull the coil spring back with the side cutters. Position the cable in the parking brake lever.
  2. Apply a light coating of high temperature grease to the brake shoe contact points on the backing plate. Position the primary brake shoe on the front of the backing plate and install the hold-down spring and washer over the mounting pin. Install the secondary shoe on the rear of the backing plate.
  3. Install the parking brake link between the notch in the primary brake shoe and the notch in the parking brake lever.
  4. Install the automatic adjuster cable loop end on the anchor pin. Make sure the crimped side of the loop faces the backing plate.
  5. Install the return spring in the primary brake shoe and, using the tapered end of the brake spring service tool, slide the top of the spring onto the anchor pin.
CAUTIONBe careful to make sure that the spring does not slip off the tool during installation, as it could cause injury.
  1. Install the automatic adjuster cable guide in the secondary brake shoe, making sure the flared hole in the cable guide is inside the hole in the brake shoe. Fit the cable into the groove in the top of the cable guide.
  2. Install the secondary shoe return spring through the hole in the cable guide and the brake shoe. Using the brake spring tool, slide the top of the spring onto the anchor pin.
  3. Clean the threads on the adjusting screw and apply a light coating of high temperature grease to the threads. Screw the adjuster closed, then open it 1/2 turn.
  4. Install the adjusting screw between the brake shoes with the star wheel nearest to the secondary shoe. Make sure the star wheel is in a position that is accessible from the adjusting slot in the backing plate.
  5. Install the short hooked end of the automatic adjuster spring in the proper hole in the primary brake shoe.
  6. Connect the hooked end of the automatic adjuster cable and the free end of the automatic adjuster spring in the slot in the top of the automatic adjuster lever.
  7. Pull the automatic adjuster lever (the lever will pull the cable and spring with it) downward and to the left and engage the pivot hook of the lever in the hole in the secondary brake shoe.
  8. Check the entire brake assembly to make sure that everything is installed properly. Make sure that the shoes engage the wheel cylinder properly and are flush on the anchor pin. Make sure that the automatic adjuster cable is flush on the anchor pin and in the slot on the back of the cable guide. Make sure that the adjusting lever rests on the adjusting screw star wheel. Pull upward on the adjusting cable until the adjusting lever is free of the star wheel, then release the cable. The adjusting lever should snap back into place on the adjusting screw star wheel and turn the wheel one tooth.
  9. Expand the brake adjusting screw until the brake drum will just fit over the brake shoes.
  10. Install the brake drum and wheel and tire assembly, then adjust the brakes.
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.

Brake frozen or rear wheel frozen

sounds like you have over adjusted the brake shoes, they are very tricky to get the balance just right and after a drive they expand from the heat. so remove the rear wheel & back off the adjustment a few turns then go for a drive to get some heat into them. jack car up and check by turning wheel with your hands, it should move freely, there will be a little resistance from turning the diff. hope this helps.
