The flywheel is contacted by the starter in order to turn over the vehicle. Therefore, the armature in the starter can be bad and hitting the flywheel off of the gears, the starter can be over powering the flywheel causing it stress fracture. There are many reasons for the potential as well as age.

Loud claking when idling, horrid noise, like a jackhammer.

    Rough shifting.

Park to drive shifting will make the vehicle jump forward bad.

    Sorry wrong area lol.

  • Anonymous Oct 13, 2011

The torque converter is basically the equivalent to a clutch in a automatic vehicle. I would doubt the problem is the torque converter as this really handles transmission speed at the point of shifting and does not engage the flywheel. I would look into other possibilities and not so much into the torque converter. Although the torque converter screws into the flywheel, they operate independent of each other.

  • Age, metal fatigue, let's see, your bell housing could be a little loose, bad converter, rust.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

You had your flywheel replaced 6 months ago and it cracked already? I think I would be very upset with the person who did this and did not take precautions to make sure the new one did not break. Yes, a bad torque converter can do some damage to a flywheel.

  • Anonymous Oct 13, 2011

What are the symtoms of a bad torque converter other than a crack flywheel the truck drives find no erradic shifting I'm a bit puzzled

I just don't see how someone replaces one and does not check the other. They are both right there. I would be asking that to the shop owner, that's negligence.

Some good ideas however none of those are happening, had a guy tell that if the Transmission isn't seated properly on alignment pins, meaning when the ****** is being removed the alignment pins may stay in the trans and if you don't remove the pin(s) from trans and put in back in the motor they can slide further back into the trans allowing the trans to move around a little, the bolts for tightening the trans to the back of the motors generally have a little play in them from yhe bell housing to motor

  • Anonymous Oct 13, 2011

Is this hog wash or possible

  • Iron

The transmission should sit proper on the dowel pins, yes and I have never heard of leaving some play in the bell housing. Them bolts should be tight. What exactly is happening to make you thing you are having issues right now?

  • Anonymous Oct 13, 2011

I don't know bit everything run real smooth no extra sounds a nice quiet engine then I got another broken flwheelthis the second broken flywheel in 6 months

Who did the install 6 months ago? Have you had a new starter installed recently? How far were the dowel pins sticking out? If not at all you bet that is a problem. I can type out some things to look at with a feeler gauge and a strait edge to see how flat things are.

Are your engine and transmission stock? Input shaft have any play? Loose converter bolts?

  • Anonymous Oct 13, 2011

My engine is stock however I should tell you that I purchased this truck 7months ago and the guy I bought it from was a complete stranger however he had told me that the trans was rebuilt approximatley 2 years ago I have went thru this truck and fixed whatever needed to be worked on this truck looks and rides very nice except for this issue

    And no new starter recently?

  • Iron
    Iron Oct 13, 2011

If you bought it 7 months ago it could be the starter was replaced before you bought the truck and the wrong starter can do some damage. You might want to pull the starter and find out if it is the right one. Try replacing with a correct one. But since you have to separate the transmission and transmission again to redo this again do the checking while in thee.

Check the input shaft to see if it is to tight. Make sure it has a littl side to side play at least.

Check your driveshaft to see if it's bent.

Straitedge the converter and make sure it is flat.

        Are your converter bolts loose?

Did you use an OEM flexplate?

Straitedge the mating surface of the bellhousing and make sure there are no cracks at all.

Straitedge the back of the engine block.

Check the uniform thickness of the spacers, flexplate adaptor with a feeler gauge.

Make sure the bellhousing bolts are tight.

Separate the engine and transmission again that is.

How to tell if a flywheel is bad

most flywheel faults are heat related caused by a slipping clutch . Remove the transmission and inspect for , blue color heat spots . small cracks. scores caused by a worn out driven plate, run out check with a dial gauge. most flywheels can be machined as good as new . All ways fit a new replacement clutch kit with a new throw out bearing.

up to "you got the one lucky flexplate" that had stress fractures during manufacturing.

Starter starts rough

Flywheel teeth are worn or missing, or starter gear faulty not fully contacting your flywheel. Inspect flyweel for cracks. A cracked flywheel will more than likely make a knocking sound.

How to view/inspect flywheel

there should be a cover you can unbolt under the truck/car, to inspect the flywheel, it may be something other than the flywheel, how did you arrive @ this thought ? manual or automatic trans ? could be your engine, does sound get louder when you give it throttle in neutral, or when your moving ? think about it !

I have a subaru 1993 ej20t and clutch is sliping when revs are lower rather than higher

You will need to replace the clutch plate.
Also on Subarus, check the condition of the flywheel as this is prone to cracking on 4x4 models. Replace if it shows signs of cracking, otherwise this may cause clutch judder after reinstallation.

Toyota t100 1998 flywheel cracks what is making it crack this is the third time. what else can i check?

Possible that the flywheel alignment is not set correctly or there is an issue with the starter motor pinion or settings.
It is important that the starter is removed and the settings of the flywheel meshing with the pinion is checked out. It can be an issue here that can crack the flywheel.
if not the engine alignment or is there is a bearing fault on the engine crank must be checked.

Bought truck from private seller...3 months later cracked flywheel...replaced with new one...3 months later cracked flywheel again....need answers

you need to change the oil every 3 thousand miles and stay on top of your automatic transmission fluid. Keep the radiator full and make sure you are protected from freezing. Keep terminals clean on battery brushing away any trace of debris. As for the problem, perhaps your best bet would to be to carry a few spare flywheels in your trunk just in case a crack pops up again in one of them.
