I have a BMW X3, 2004, 2.5cc, auto gear, Petrol. The local dealer is unable to fix the problem. Diagnostic computer error message found by the dealer is "5dea Transfer case Temperature”
I need help. When driving, the car has some noise that sound like a gear slipping or jerking noise under the car. More towards the back of the drive or left of the car, I cannot tell. This is more when in traffic jam or going up a hill. I also noticed that this happens after say 20 minutes of driving.

hello there
The problem is with the gear oil. To keep ahead of the rest BMW started what they call life time oil for their gear boxes, though that sounds great it doesn't really work in reality, they have now gone back to recommending a gear oil change every 60k miles.
In short you need to change your gear oil and soon, the oil in your gear box is no longer effective and will damage the gear box. You'll need about 5 litres for your car and costs around £15 a litre, expensive stuff!! I had the same problem with my 328i auto, the dealer was clueless and kept quoting the lifetime oil, I changed the oil and the problem has gone and it's so much smoother.
Hope this helps, please don't forget to rate me.

The mechanic should not have drove when the temp when up and he knows that. The heatgasket is probably now blow. This may be up to $600 for them to fix it. Otherwise check radiator hoses.

If you took this in and had BMW do the work to fix it and it is not fixed why do you not return to BMW and get it fixed, If you have paid for a repair and the repair did not solve the problem have them refund your money.

This could be caused by two things. Your engine could be burning excess oil under strain which smells like burning rubber, and also the belt could be slipping causing the smell. The only other thing is the tires may be slipping if they are worn. This would cause very uneven wear on the tire so the last one would be very obvious.

if the transmission was low on fluid you may have worn some parts, take this to a shop that specializes in BMW transmissions, this is not for the local transmission guy, special tools needed to test the transmission, may have to be re-programed
