The thermostat is an easy replacement. The part from the part store should be very inexpensive and is very easy to install. IMPORTANT: allow the cars cooling system to completely cool down before starting to work on it. Here are the steps to replace the thermostat:

1. Allow car to cool.
2. Place drain pan under radiator and allow for coolant to drain below the thermostat. Do not completely drain the system unless replacing the fluid.
3. Remove the hose clamp and hose from thermostat housing.
4. Remove the two bolts holding the housing to engine.
5. Remove the thermostat gasket and clean the gasket completely off the engine and thermostat housing.
6. Remove the thermostat and replace with new.
7. Place new gasket on with reassembly.

To replace a thermostat, you will need at least: 1. A new thermostat 2. Screwdriver 2. Needle-nosed pliers. Depending on the thermostat and location in your home, you may need more. Make sure the new thermostat you are using to replace the old one with is compatible to your 110-volt housing circuitry. Always turn off the electrical power to the home thermostat at the power panel or circuit breaker box.--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trace the upper radiator hose to the mounting area on the intake manifold. Loosen the hose clamp on the manifold end of the hose and remove the hose. Pull the thermostat out of the intake manifold.

i own a 1989 ford laser gl and it over heated and bubbling.There is no water in the oil already checked . Could it be the thermostat or a gasket.

drain out coolant in a drain until below thermostat level follow radiator hose to engine cylinder block to thermostat housing.remove thermostat housing than remove thermostat.replace with a new o-ring on thermostat before installing new thermostat.make sure thermostat housing surface and engine block surface clean.before installing new thermostat.

It is in the rear of the engine by the firewall and the intake manifold will need to be removed to gain access t it.

Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement (LA3, LY9) Removal Procedure

1. Remove the thermostat housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement .




2. Complete the following in order to remove the thermostat from the thermostat housing:
2.1. Depress the ears on both sides of the thermostat. 2.2. Rotate the thermostat until it clears the retaining feature of the housing. 2.3. Release the pressure from the thermostat. 2.4. Pull the thermostat from the thermostat housing.

Installation Procedure

1. Complete the following in order to Install the thermostat into the thermostat housing:
1.1. Align the thermostat pin to the thermostat housing orifice. 1.2. Depress the ears on both sides of the thermostat. 1.3. Rotate the thermostat until it aligns with the retaining feature of the housing. 1.4. Release the pressure from the thermostat.
2. Install the thermostat housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement .

The removal of the thermostat from its housing on the 4.0L engine

To install:

1. Install the replacement thermostat so that the pellet, which is encircled by a coil spring, faces the engine. All thermostats are marked on the outer flange to indicate the proper installed position.
   
2. Observe the recess groove in the engine cylinder head .
   
3. Position thermostat into this groove with arrow and air bleed hole on outer flange pointing up.
   
4. Install replacement gasket and thermostat housing
   
   CAUTION Tightening the thermostat housing unevenly or with the thermostat out of its recess may result in a cracked housing.
   
   
5. Tighten the housing bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) torque.
   
6. Install hoses to thermostat housing.
   
7. Install electrical connector to coolant temperature sensor.
   
8. Be sure that the radiator draincock is tightly closed. Fill the cooling system.
   
9. Start and warm the engine. Check for leaks
   

WARNING Do not loosen radiator drain **** with system hot and pressurized. Serious burns from coolant can occur.



NOTE Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse. If thermostat is being replaced, be sure that replacement is specified thermostat for vehicle model and engine type.
