I have a 85 ford ranger 2.8L V 6 and i just replaced the motor and the clutch in it and after i got it all put back in it was fine i drove it a couple of times around the block the it set for about a month and the i tried to start it up and it would not start up so i charged the bat. and it started up so i drove it about two miles then i turned off and when i went to start it again the starter just spun so i replaced it the it started onces then it just spun again but i can roll the truck and the it will engage onces then it will do the same thing again and i have replaced the starter like 5 or 6 times.
There is a saftey switch on the clutch when u press it down it allows it to crank, the switch could have went out, there is also a little bar that slides into an opening in the top of the clutch that mite have slipped out, or there is something called a diaphram (i think thats what its called) it should be on the transmition with that year model it could have went bad or the wires mite be loose
Kinda sounds like it is the flywheel. Next time it happens, take the starter off, and look or feel the flywheel. If it is ground down, you will need to get one put in.

if you have replaced the clutch , t will be a clutch plate put in back to front
If it is hydraulic clutch ,it will be a master cylinder or slave cylinder problem
if it is cable clutch , it will be a failed clutch cable
i assume this is a manual transmission , sounds like the clutch may have broken up , causing the flywheel not to turn when the starter is operated , will need to be seen by a mechanic
I remember a problem with the Ranger Series involving the hydraulic assisted clutch. There was a special refill procedure for a few Year Models. If the hydraulics leaked during storage an air bubble could occur and they are next to impossible to get fresh fluid back to fill the void. And it would not fix the leak.
I remember a video showing all the components fastened to a display board to train Mechanics on the extra effort needed to bleed this system.
I would say to search the Web under a topic like "Ford Ranger hydraulic clutch bleeding" to find the article. Even if you replace the current clutch cylinder, it may be no less difficult to refill. Your mechanic may need the info you find.
all i can say is check for power and ground at the fuel pump. get someone to turn the key to the on position (not crank!) and use a test light to see if you are getting power.
Sounds like the idle bypass valve is nfg. Try checking engine codes first. Try this link, you'll find it helpful. http://autorepair.about.com/od/troubleshooting/a/OBD_codes.htm . If you need to know how to check the codes, ask back here, I'll explain. Hope this helps.
take back to dealer and have them check the neutral safety switch on the clutch because if the switch is not adjusted properly you will have this problem
did you check your flywheel ? sone teeth may be missing causing the starter to spin
