I have a 2001 Olds Intrigue that won't start every once in a while. When it won't start the security light flashes so GM told me it was the passcode and I would have to change the ignition switch and the cylinder. If I change it myself I would have to take it in for them to reset the passcode. I don't think it is worth spending that much money on this car and I don't need the security. Can I reset it myself or bypass the security somehow?

Turn the key to acc and wait about 10 minuter for the security light to go solid or stop blinking

Did you have a new key cut using a blank that matches the old chip ?

I OWN a 2001 Olds Alero and the same thing happens to mine.. It's an easy fix..
1. Turn the Key to ACC (keep it in this mode for the entire 10 minutes).
2. The security light on the Dashboard will flash for exactly 10 minutes..
3. Once the 10 mins are over, the security light will stay solid..
Wait for the red light to disappear off the dashboard...
YOU ARE NOW READY TO TURN YOUR CAR OFF AND RESTART YOU CAR....

SIMPLE FIX..

Pull it out and reinstall it. Chances are you did not get the new parts properly engaged with the opposite/complementary stops on the steering column.
