Check and top up the coolant level. When an engine heats up fast and there is no heat from the heater it is low enough on coolant that it doesn't circulate through the heater core. Hope this helps.

Car overheats in drive when stopped

Do you know if the cooling fan works ?
Have you checked the coolant level in the radiator ?

I have a 2005 Chevy Equinox. During the day after it's been sitting, when you first crank it the a/c blows hot. But once you get rolling at a good speed it cools down. BUT, when you stop at a red...

This sounds like your cooling fan is not running. If you were to stop too long with with the engine idling it would overheat the engine. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this is a very serious issue. I can have a number of causes, like bad cooling motor, bad wiring or conectors, bad relay, open fuse, etc. Please have it diagnosed and repared before it overheats the engine and possibly damages the engine. If you are stopped in trafic you can place the transmission in neutral and shut off the engine. When trafic restarts you can restart the engine and place the transmission in drive again and continue. I hope this helps.

1990 toyota pickup is running hot and when i shut

Try with the small stuff first. Replace the thermostat. Before you do that, you should flush and refill your system with just water after the flush process. The bottle of solution that you put into your radiator to flush it and clean it has instructions, follow those. Then let the car cool down and drain the system and refill it with fresh water only. Run this water for a bit and then do it once more. Once cooled back down , replace thermostat and replace the 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.
Check engine oil level as well, low oil will overheat engines quickly.

91 toyota 4x4 22re overheats on highway, but not at idle.

original issue sounded like thermostat but now that you have lost power i would have to say thermostat, blown head gasket, and warped head

to check thermostat find and remove place in pot of boiling water the see if it opens, then to ice water to check if closes.

the only way i know to check headgasket and head is to check oil and water. oil will have water in it, and water iw have oil in it
