The Engine Control Module (ECM) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is placed on the engine compartment at the left bottom side of the windshield, inside a black color plastic box. See picture below:

Under bonnet on the right side of the car face to windscreen you will find the fuse box / relay plate - engine bay. Here is placed the Data Link Connector (DLC) for Audi A6 Quattro 1997.
