The safest way would be the agents, go to the MBUSA website. Select your vehicle model and year under the owners support->owners manuals section and you can download the user manual. Currently they offer manuals from 2000 and up.
Look for water pump, fan belts, steering belt, AC belts and pulleys. These are common causes of these strange noises which come on and off. Also check all the mechanical nuts, bolts, screws are tightened and not rattled.
