It probably broke down inside. All you can do is take it apart and see.

Hello oldiro: My name is Roger and I can help. From under the vehicle look up between the transmission and the side of the block. Mid motor above the pan rail there is a bolted in sensor. This should be the crank sensor. It will have two wires plugged in to it. Please rate this answer as this lets us know you received the information you asked for. See if you can make the latch work by just using a screw driver in the slot to lock it, then open it with the key. If that works ok, you will need to raise the striker and align it to the latch.

You have to loosen the parking brake cables so you can pull the handle up as far as it will go. You may have to take the cables off the handle. When you do this if you look down from the front towards the pivot of the handle you'll see a small lever that can be turned, it has teeth on one end a like a flat ball on the other. Slide down the rod and use a screw driver to spin plate around so the flat ball end goes into the hook of the rod. So as you press the button it will move and unlock from the teeth on the gear that stays in place. Reattach your parking brake cables and adjust and the job will be done.
