Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. On the parking brake handle, the button has come loose and now the parking brake does not work. You can pull the lever up, but it never catches the gears and the button is loose. You can pull the button out a couple inches - it is on a rod with springs. Any idea what came loose and what it takes to fix? Thanks - Jim

It probably broke down inside. All you can do is take it apart and see.

Hello oldiro: My name is Roger and I can help. From under the vehicle look up between the transmission and the side of the block. Mid motor above the pan rail there is a bolted in sensor. SOURCE: 2003 pontiac sunfire trunk won't close

See if you can make the latch work by just using a screw driver in the slot to lock it, then open it with the key. If that works ok, you will need to raise the striker and align it to the latch.

SOURCE: i need a diagram of a 1969 vw handbrake lever

You have to loosen the parking brake cables so you can pull the handle up as far as it will go. You may have to take the cables off the handle. When you do this if you look down from the front towards the pivot of the handle you'll see a small lever that can be turned, it has teeth on one end a like a flat ball on the other. Slide down the rod and use a screw driver to spin plate around so the flat ball end goes into the hook of the rod. So as you press the button it will move and unlock from the teeth on the gear that stays in place. Reattach your parking brake cables and adjust and the job will be done.

Parking brake

Sounds like the cable is not connected to the back brakes, or the lock pin is broke in the handle.

'97 sunfire pulls hard to the right when brakes applied. Changed pads and rotors on front end and bleed brakes but made no difference. Any suggestions?

When you changed the pads did you notice if one side was worn more than the other? The most common cause of pulling when you apply the brakes is a seized caliper. It won't work and the other does all the braking. Your left caliper is likely seized and needs to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Pontiac sunfire starts, i go to shift into park or reverse, wont move in either. vehicles has been sitting for still for a yr. what is the problem?

Put the car in neutral, can you get it to roll forward or backward with a couple of people pushing the car? I suspect the problem is your brakes froze up due to the one year sitting. Was the emergency brake on while the car was not being driven? If it was, it is stuck on, and probably will need to be disassembled (remove wheels and pull drums). You can try soaking the cable with some type of penetrating oil, and let it sit to work in, you may be able to get the cable working. If the e-brake was not on, it is the brake pads/shoes dragging that is the problem. Good luck.

If you are unable to do it yourself, you may want to take it to a repair shop and have them pull off the rear drums and make sure none of the hardware (springs, clips, etc.) have come loose and are dragging inside the drum. Hope this helps.

97 honda civic dx the parking brake wont release and it sticking.

what i find common is the parking brake handle slides up over time covering the release button and not allowing the park brake to go down. can you push the button with your fingertip while pulling up on the handle and release the park brake? if so you can tap the handle to the rear with out hitting the button. protect the button with a socket or use a block of wood next to the button. don't hit the button.
