Damage could be extensive or light.......depends on if you ran it with the oil light on or pressure dropped?
What does the oil look like when you stick it after it's hot? Get that oil filter off there now and replace the oil with a good quality 5w-20 ,a new filter, and a can of `Sea-Foam' engine oil additive. and run it easy.
The new oil should lick up the tarry stuff slowly,if it has any.If you notice ANY DROP IN OIL PRESSURE, check the oil right then and there.
You'll have to do an oil change again soon, say less than 200 miles to be safe.don-ohio

Help! im a *******! I tried to change my girfriends oil in her 2006 Mazda 3 and ended up draining the transmission fluid thinking it was the oil. Then filled up the engine with 4 additional quarts of oil....

Well first of all you made me laugh so hard and i had tears in my eyes just cuz of the way you were explaining your issue, But all I can say is we all make mistakes. So what you did is totally wrong and It wont hurt the car as long as you didn't run it for days. so the engine was over filled and its normal for it to smoke for a while and it will be fine after, Just make sure the level is correct and also make sure you use the Automatic transmission fluid for the tranny and if you look in the Owner's manual it should tell you how many quarters you'll need. Also its normal that the car will loose power if the Transmission fluid level is too low because there will be no pressure on the clutch and the motion will be slow. So dont panic and everything will be alright. Good luck Bro

I have a 2002 dodge neon with automatic transmission. it just starting leaking and the fluid is coming out very foamy I took it to a shop and they couldnt find a leak but they only ran it for about 20 min...

Check around trans fill tube where dip stick goes in and check for oil, if there is there could be a internal pressure leak in tranny after car is driven awhile Good luck

My saturn is overheating

If the gauge is normal, then what makes you think it overheats?
If you mean the radiator cap boils over, the cap could be defective?
There also could be so little fluid in the system that the gauge sensor is not in contact with the fluid, so can't read right.
You need to ensure the system is filled, and use a thermometer to ensure proper operating temperature.

High oil consumption 2001silverado 4wd, 4 door 6.0

Every manufacturer has a guideline.  But a quart every 1,000 miles seems higher then necessary.  Try the easy steps first. 1.  Check the PCV valve if clogged will caused pressure in crankcase and oil burning. 2. Remove spark plugs and perform visual inspection.  IF electrode is covered in gook(technical terms, sorry), then oil is leaking into that cylinder.  Most likely cause would be faulty valve stem seals. 3. Worse case scenario, engine oil rings are leaking.  If all else is good.  Perform compression test of each cylinder recording measurement, then add two small squirt of engine oil into each cylinder as you perform a second round, complete both dry then wet compression test on each cylinder before proceeding.  IF any cylinder shows a more significant increase in compression then it would indicate that cylinder's oil rings are faulty.  This is a major repair.  Keep me posted
