1992 ford ranger 3.0

I have a 1992 ford ranger xlt. 3.0 liter. The engine has fuel to the fuel rails getting spark but will not start. engine will crank continuously but will not fire. when key is turned to on position with engine off the fuel pump continues to run leading me to believe it could be flooding. but once the plugs are removed it seems the fuel injectors are not spraying. i drove the truck to where it's parked and it would not start again once shut off.

I checked the fuel pump enertia switch, it did not need reset. I have replaced relays and ignition switch. If I toggle the key on and off several times in quick succession then slowly a couple times it will cycle normally, then start. I can hear some kind of relay or switch make a crackling humming noise under the dash when it attempts to cycle properly. I can also hear the fuel pump at all times it will only start however when the pump pressurizes the fuel system then shut off for ignition. The inertia switch kills power all together to the pump. When the engine does start it runs great sometimes it will stay running, sometimes it will die and at those times you can hear the fuel pump whirring constantly. Do you have any other ideas or suggestions? I am baffled by this truck

truck died while driving. will not restart but engine turns over okay. Not sure where to start troubleshooting.

Installed new fuel pump, engine cranks, runs for about a minute then cuts off. Each time I crank again the engine runs less time.

I was once pulling a trailer with a ranger when it suddenly lost power and the engine died. turns out the problem was with the fuel shut off inertia switch. the switch is supposed to activate in case of accident. on my model the inertia switch is located in the passenger side under the glove box. dont know where yours is located. once you find it, just push the button and see if it resets. good luck.

also called a fuel shut off valve which is to shut off the gas flow to the engine in case of a collision which happened to me in my 92. Mine was located under the dash where the pasengers toes would be, "under the carpet" there is a switch, press it. It should start. they can go off just from a hard jar or pothole as well.

Just because you hear the pump running does not mean it is supplying the correct pressure.Yoiu need to put a guage on it.I am not sure what the pressure is supposed to be for your truck.I am sure if you google fuel pressure you will find it.

1988 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4. Newly purchased dual fuel tank has an internal fuel pump, an inline pump, a fuel tank selector unit, and what looks like a second fuel tank selector unit (which is leaking).

The black reservoir/fuel tank selector unit you are referring to is the fuel tank switching valve, which is designed to switch between the two fuel tanks in your 1988 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4. This valve is responsible for directing fuel from the selected tank to the fuel pump and engine.
The second fuel tank selector unit you mentioned (part number 5sv2k) is likely a replacement part for the original fuel tank selector unit. It is not intended to replace the fuel tank switching valve.
The dual fuel tank system in your Ford Ranger requires both the fuel tank switching valve and the fuel tank selector unit to function properly. The fuel tank selector unit allows the driver to switch between the two fuel tanks, while the fuel tank switching valve directs fuel from the selected tank to the fuel pump and engine.
If the black fuel tank switching valve is leaking or malfunctioning, it should be replaced to ensure proper operation of your dual fuel tank system.

Where do I find the fuel filter on a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT 2.9 liter?

If it's new enough it might be inside the fuel tank, if not then it is probably in between the fuel tank and the engine on the inside of the frame rail underneath the truck on the driver's side. It will be a small round inline filter. The special fittings on the ford are a pain so you may have to buy the tools for that from O'reilly's.

first go to an auto partstore and have the code checked. most do it for free. could be coil, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter or even a bad gas cap. but the dianogstic test should pin point the problem.

the fuel filter is on the inside of the frame rail just aft of the driver under the truck. You may need a little spring clip release tool to get the lines off the filter, any parts store like NAPA or Autozone should have the tool, very cheap, about $6 US

1992 ford ranger

If this speratic problem seams to happen most when it's raining or damp, it is a shorting master contol that is to blame. The master control mother board is located on the firewall. Over time, the moisture seal on the cover fails and the motherboard gets damp and meny false signals are sent. This can even happen if the truck is off and key is not in the ignition (this mother board will alwas have power going to it as long as the battery is connected). A cheap way to check this is to remove the cover, put a plastic grocery bag over the mother board and use an small elastic band to close the open end, allow the wires connected to the mother board to go out the open end. If this solves the problem, replace the seals on the master control cover. Care should be taken as if there is ANY corrossion on the mother board, it will need to be replaced.
