usually it is a vacuum leak which is letting more air into the engine. With engine running, use a spray water bottle and mist around all vacuum lines, the power brake booster and engine seams. Then try any vacuum line to the transmission. Could also be a burst vacuum shift diaphram if so equipped.
The are normally located in the gear lever itself.
A common problem though- check if your brake lights are working! In order for the solenoid to release, you have to press the brake pedal. The brake light switch sends this signal and if there is a blown fuse or a faulty brake light switch, it is the common fault for the solenoid not disengaging. These solenoids themselves are not a commonly faulty unit!
go here, we will solve for free. I ran the Villager service program for Ford. Post there and the group will help you. You could just have a bad TP sensor.
Make sure the shift lever is working properly. If the lever is sloppy and loose it is not engaging the proper gear for starting (P or N). If this is the case a bolt is loose or missing on the shift mechanism under the dash. Get under dash with a flashlight and check the shift Mechanism. Replace or tighten the bolt(s) securely. There are two and are probably a brass color. This problem happened to me and it is quite common on the Villager.
