Question about 1990 Honda CRX

4 Answers

Won't start I have a Honda CRX (1990) that is a 16 valve and fuel injected. It stalled out while driving, but did start back up after a few tries. I parked it, and started it an hour later with no probs. Well, the next morning it won't start and hasn't since. It tries to turn over, but won't quite kick up. Can anyone help?

I already changed the fuel filter. When I did, there was plenty of fuel in the old one and after putting in the new one, fuel immediately filled it. Would the pump still be the problem?

See, I thought the timing as well. When I turn the engine over, it tries to start. It just sounds like its wheening. I know how to change a belt, but I only worked on my old chevy truck, never an import. Does this CRX have a timing belt? Or is it a chain drive? Where would I look for the belt in this car? I really do apreciate the feedback. This has been helpful so far

How would I know if my fuel pump is bad?

  • Rhyno326 Oct 14, 2008

I was driving around the other day and my 1990 CRX stalled out. It wouldn't restart so I had to tow it home. Once I got it home I disconnected the feed line to the filter to see if the pump was working and it was. Next I disconnected the line coming out of the filter at the inlet to the fuel rail and had fuel there also. Then I disconnected the fuel return line just after the fuel rail and there was nothing coming out. Could the problem be a fuel pressure regulator?

Another thing to check would be the main relay.

Sounds to me like the timing has slipped a bit. by the sound of it you have good fuel delivery. A pretty typical symptom is the engine just about starts. That's where I would be checking

Change your fuel filter. Probably clogged. If you get it started, even though it's clogged, the extra work required by the fuel pump to push fuel through will wear out the pump prematurely.

Be prepared to change your fuel pump soon. You probably have two pumps: a boost pump to push it up out of the tank, and a high pressure pump to drive your injectors. So if you change the filter, and you get it running, get ready for a pump change. And while you're doing that, go ahead and change out both pumps. Fuel pumps work together just like your headlamps. If one headlamp goes out, you change both, so do the same with your fuel pumps.

It does sound like one of your pumps has died.

  • Anonymous Sep 13, 2008

Normally, if your timing belt slipped, your engine would be destroyed because of valve interference.

But please feel free to change components that are not related to the gripe at hand.

    Good luck.

1997 honda odyssey rpms go up and down while in park and trys to stall out when in gear and take foot off gas pedal

The idle speed in your car is controlled by a computer (known as the PCM), the computer controls a valve called the Air Bypass Valve, this valve and the throttle valve get full of sludge from fuel vapors and combustion "blow back", this causes the valve to stick or move slowly, this in turn causes surging (speed goes up and down) in the idle speed of the engine, it is the most common reason for idle surge on any fuel injected gas engine up to about 2004 when car makers starting using electronic throttle control. To clean the idle speed control valve and the throttle valve do the following.
To correct this problem Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, NEVER USE CARB CLEANING SPRAY, IT DESTROYS THE ANTI-STICK TEFLON COATING, spray it into the air intake through the throttle body of the engine until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes. The intake is now clean, if you continue to have the idle speed control problems you may need to seek the help of a professiona

You may have some chunky contaminants in your fuel tank that are blocking the supply line, screen sock, or fuel filter. The screen sock is located inside the fuel tank on the bottom of the fuel pump and filters the fuel going into the supply line for the fuel pump. Your fuel filter is typically mounted under the back seat behind the driver, but Honda tends to move things around a bit so you may want to verify that location with your local auto parts store. If you run the tank below 1/8 frequently, that tends to draw the chunks into the sock, line, and fuel filter. You may be able to just change the fuel filter and use a concentrated quality fuel Injection / system cleaner like Justice Brothers fuel injection cleaner . Avoid "cheap" cleaners - all they do is break up your money, not the contaminants in the system. Fuel injected systems run at a much higher pressure than carbureted systems, so be careful when releasing the pressure from the filter to avoid getting sprayed. If you don't have a manual, then I would suggest getting a Chiltons repair manual for the specific steps required in changing the filter - as well as the specific location, as it may also be under the vehicle in various places. Afterwards, try not to let your car get below 1/4 tank to keep this from happening in the future, and use a can of Injection cleaner about every 10th tank fill. Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Engine stalls when turning left hand corners.

turn left, sputter, sputter, pop! sputter, sputter..............vvveeerrrooommm !? WTF? Crazy 91 Honda CRX just became a death car tryin to get through an intersection. Checked all my wires and ended up in the gas tank tryin to put the fuel pump back together. POS pump is in the left side of the tank!? So if you got a few miles on it the fuel pump screen can fall off. Turn left and the last 1/8th of a tank goes to the right leaving a 3/4 ton chevy in your girlfrends lap...well almost. I still got the CRX, the girl got droped off at the car wash cuz she smelled like poo.

Normally this sort of scenario indicates a sticking or broken EGR valve and/or a serious vacuum leak. Either of these will cause the problem you described.

Hope this helps you....

Have you checked the ignition timing? Maybe you need to turn the distributor to the left or right if you don't have the timing light gun
