The electronic compass display is no longer showing on the overhead console on my 2003 crown vic. I don't see a fuse or a way to check the bulb, if there is one. What can I do to resolve this issue myself. Glenn

Number 16 has a fuse (15) that looks fine. Side note: I did notice that fuses 2,18, and 20 had no fuse in the slot.
So if fuse 16 is ok, now what?

  • gking711 Aug 31, 2011

The fuse seems fine, so how do you replace the "tiny display light"?

The fuse number for the compass light is fuse number 16 have you checked that? The fuse is located in the inside fuse box.

Passenger compartment fuse panel

The fuse panel is located below and to the left of the steering wheel by

the brake pedal. Remove the panel cover to access the fuses.

To remove a fuse use the fuse puller tool provided on the fuse panel
cover.
If the fuse checkes ok then either the Compass is defective or the tiny display light has burnt out.

Remove the compass and sent it out for repair to a Ford authorized repair center, the cost will be around $100.00 to repair. Contact any local Ford dealer for the name of a local company that does the repairs to Ford electronics.

Ford doesn't supply part or repair information to the public, so you can't fix it at home.

I have never done one of these, but if you remove the outer shell from the electronics inside (and you are sure that the display works and the back-light is just burnt out) then you will find one of two types of back-light bulb set ups one will be a tiny twist out socket with 2 wires going to it, the bulb can be had at Radio Shack or the Ford dealer, the 2nd kind of back--light that is used on may later models is a tiny bulb that is hard wired to the printed circuit board, this type will require a low temp soldering pencil, small diameter low melt solder and a solder suction gun to pull the solder away from the circuit board where the bulb is wired in, the bulb used in this type of display can also be had at Radio Shack, the part number of the tiny bulb is 7219. Unless you have installed parts on printed circuit boards this may better be left to a repair shop, apply to much heat and the board is ruined.

Helpful information ... Thanks. But it sounds too daunting if it is the latter type of bulb (for me). As my Merc GM gets older, it's the electronics that are failing within.

My 2003 Ford Sport trac compass/temp no longer work. Is there a fuse and if so which one is it that should be replaced?

This is a very common problem with many of the mid 2000 Ford truck and SUV overhead consoles. The console is very prone to internal failure. If the dome lights work but the compass unit does not then it is a faulty computer unit. I offer a reasonable repair service with a lifetime guarantee, check it out: www.autoclockrepair.com
There is a bunch of useful info there. Drop me an email if you have questions, thanks!

Is there a fuse for the overhead compass/temp dispaly for a 2006 Toyota Tacoma and where is it located?

The 10 amp IGI #2 fuse controls several other components including the dome light, cruise control, and brake lights. If these are working but the compass is dim, intermittent, or dead then the control module has gone bad. You can get a replacement from toyota but I believe it costs $500+.
