If I understand your situation, you are saying the engine was run with one quart and you added 2 more quarts of oil. Now you have 3 quarts which is less than what it takes to make it full. On some engines it takes 5 quarts of oil. You will have to check the dipstick to see where you are now compared to the full mark.

If it is still less than full, it may cause some noise, but depending on how long you ran it with the oil low, how hot it got and other unknowns, you may have a serious problem. Try adding oil to the fill mark and pray that after you run it awhile the noise will go away. The noise may be the lifters trying to work with little or no pressure. It is possible that after the oil top off and a bit of driving they may pressure up and start working again.

My check engine light activated on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - what does it mean?

All modern cars have this generic info light. You have several options:
1) Free (sort of) most oil change places can check it.
2) Buy your own OBDII scanner, about $100 bucks, works for all '96 and newer cars. Gives peace of mind that YOU know what is wrong even if you can't fix it.
3) Take to mechanic and hope they are honest and don't take you to cleaners.

Generally this light is tied to the emissions systems. Your car won't pass a smog check but it may run just fine. If you are capable check all your fluids especially the oil. Good luck.

Oil light comes on intermittently

Replace oil sending unit (usually somewhere near oil filter) Add a pint of marvel oil to help clean passageways. Make sure wire on sender is not grounding anywhere.
