I have a 1998 Buick Regal GS that the ignition does not go back to off setting . It starts and runs just fine but will not turn off completely. Whta could it be?

I can manualy take the key out by taking the cover off under the key and turn the cylinder lock. However this works but sometimes the key will go to the off position without having to take the cover off. I am going to replace the ignition switch and cylinder. I just don't know if that is going to fix the problem.

Can you get the key out? if so then it is a bad ignition switch. If the key won't remove then the nuetral safety switch from the transmission is not sending a signal to the switch to relase the key and it wont turn off till the selenoid in the column relases the pin that is holding it back. That could be the issue, but I would recommend that you lubricate any moving parts that you see, and shoot some in the ignition switch as well. Use only a graphite lubricant. Worst case scenario, you have to get a new switch.

If you can't remove the key here is a tip to get it out, there is an override switch that you can press to release the Key. There is a small (about the size of a dime) cap on the underside of the steering column. Pry it off with a screwdriver and then stick the screwdriver in the hole. It will hit a button that lets the key out of the ignition. If this is the problem then the selenoid may not be functioning or like I said it can also be the neutral safety switch.

Might just be that your switch is gummed up from something spilled on it, the shifter is not waterproof). The problem is the thumb switch that enable a gear change does not make contact once liquid comes in contact. If your key is stuck work that thumb switch up and down a few times or use the release button mention above.

    To make the repair:
1)with strong finger or a screw driver pop off the top middle piece around the shifter dial. No need to remove the side pieces.
2)Move the thumb swith used for gear change up and down and you'll see it has metal parts near the floor where an electrical connector is located. Spray any metal moving parts as you work the thumb switch up down up down. Thats it.

Moreover, you'll noticed a relay click on steering wheel as your work the thumb switch up down up down. If this is the case then all it needs is cleaning.

That sounds like that is where the issue is by your description, I would try and lube it up a little before replacing, the tumblers get dry and the keys leave a fine dust and grime over the years and this makes the issue worse.

1998 buick regal gs heat blows hot on passenger side and cold on the driver side.

Same problem on my 98 Regal GS; remove glove box, locate the blend door actuator, (black odd shaped box with metal "ring"). Remove the box and manually turn the blend door shaft it was attached to. If you get cold air, it's the actuator you removed. About 30-40 dollars.

I would have to agree. The ignition switch is most likely the problem. If you replace it then you should solve the problem. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I hope this helps you out.

I had the same problem with my 98 regal. I replaced a wiring harness on the steering column that has heavy gadge wires coming from the fire wall and going to a small black box directly below the ignition switch.Since I replaced it I have not had any problems
