I have a 1997 oldsmobile aurora, the problem with it is that some times it shows that it is gettin hot on the gauge and sometimes it doesnt. it was smoking but we figured out that the radiator resivoir cap was leaking and we changed that. Then we noticed that the upper radiator hose had a ball in it. we still need to change that but could the thermostat be the problem or the sensor?

SOURCE: 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora Outside Temp Gauge

the sensor is in behind the nosecone. but this should not effect the ac system . it would it the inside temp sender said that in the auto mode only. put it in defrost mode and the compressor should be on if not you have another problem (maybe low on freon)

SOURCE: My gauges(temp, speedometer, tachometer, fuel, etc.) do not work

I believe that this is caused by a blown Relay or Fuse. I also just went through this. I took my Relays into NAPA and replaced them all, refered back to the diagram and installed the new ones, I also, (unsure if it'll make a difference) turned every fuse to face upright and in the same direction after removing to clean the contact point with a soft tipped metel brush. Overall, replace the Relays and you should be fine.

I cant stop my car from gettin hot even tho i changed the water pump and thermostat

Is the car shutting down from overheating? Do you hear the cooling fans coming on at all?

One thing that a lot of people overlook is a sensor that tells the dashboard guage what the temperature of teh coolant is. I have had one go bad on me and my temp gauge told me I was way into the Hot zone within a minute or two of driving the car.

My cooling fans do not come on unless the AC is on, and they don't run very fast

the fan speed is variable to save fuel, the fans don't run unless the engine gets really hot, about 230 F, that is well past the middle of the gauge if u havce one, so the fact they run with the AC on means the system is almost certainly functional as long as u are not showing an engine overheat, are U?

Causes for overheating in a 1997 oldsmobile aurora

Do the fan(s) come on when hot? Blow out the radiator core with compressed air (from the engine side) to clear it of bugs and other debris. Make sure the radiator is full to the top (when cold) and check the radiator cap seal rubber and the over-flow tank and tubing for leakage. It's possible that the water pump impeller is slipping on it's shaft and not pumping water properly. Remove the thermostat temporarily and remove the radiator cap. Remove some of the water so that the level is somewhat below the cap bottom, then start the engine and watch for rapidly moving water. That will show that the pump is moving water well. Allow the engine to heat up and keep track of the water movement. Shut the engine off at low end of 'normal' on the temp gauge and replace the cap so that it doesn't blow out boiling water into your face. Replace the thermostat and top up the water when cold again.

Steering problem

If you can turn fine one direction and not the other then the pump most likley is not the problem. I would lean more towards the rack and pinion. The pump only supplys pressure, the rack has controls for direction.

1997 Olds Aurora A/C Issues

The outside temp sensor is located in front of the radiator at the bottom of the radiator....It should have a two wire harness pluged into it.
