93 GMC Z71 - rough start or sometimes won't start unless it sits for a while (hours). When it does start it smells of gas and usually is accompanyed by smoke coming out of exhaust. Replaced fuel filter, checked injectors and pressure seems okay. It will run fine for few days but then boom it gives me a hard time. 5.7L any ideas/suggestions would be AWESOME!

I'm assuming "white" smoke and not "black" since you didn't mention.
If white smoke, it's coolant or oil leaking into the cylinder heads while it is not running.
If oil and from leaking valve guide seals, it's not a serious thing and basically a nuisance. Just keep your motor oil level topped off until you have new seals installed or dispose of vehicle.
If coolant, it's a much more serious problem. The liquid in the head will do two things. One, foul the spark plug and possibly cause hydraulic lock (fluids cannot be compressed and cylinder locks up)
Check you oil level and if keeps going down a quart every few hundred miles, it's the valve seals.
Check your coolant. If down, it's possibly a head gasket leak, which is not uncommon for vintage and make.
If coolant keeps going down and not leaking on ground, that's a smoking gun, not to make a bad pun, for a leaking head gasket. At this point, it's prudent to first invest $10 on Barr's Leak Copper (looks like liquid copper in a jar) and add to your coolant system. Follow manufacturer's instructions and then see if problem either persists or abates.
If it abates, go and buy a lottery ticket since you're very lucky and solved a serious problem with an inexpensive fix.

Good Luck

SOURCE: I have a 1988 GMC Sierra 1500 that wont stay running

1988 gmc runs for a little but dies. Check your c.t.s that checks the temp. of your coolent and when it fails it tells computor engin is hot, t.p.s takes over closes butterfly and chocks the air to keep engine from runnin to lean. If engine is not hot it will flood and stop runnin then some time will go by befor truck tries to start. May not be probablem but its a thought. c.t.s is located on manifold by top radiator hose neck. My truck was fine than sat had simmilor problem when i went to use again thats what i changed and seems to be back to normal. Hope this helps.

93 gmc safari odometer stopped working, then started again, then turns over but won't start.

It could be a bad fuse or a bad fuel pump not providing fuel for the car. It could also be an issue with the timing belt.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I cant turn off the headlights off while my 03 GMC Sierra Z71 is running, the manual switch does nothing unless the truck is turned off.

I have a 2003 GMC Sierra Z71 Extended Cab and the headlight switch won't turn off the headlights while the truck is running. When I got the truck the Photocell Sensor which is the black bubble that sits on the dash that tells the daytime running lights to turn off and on was down in the dash so I fished it out with my fingers and clipped it back in and it made the daytime running lights work. I still can't turn my headlights off while my truck is running though. The owner's manual says that I am able to do so. There's 2 light's on the switch by AUTO and the O for off that should light up? Is it my whole switch?

Car wont start untill i press on the gas?

Check your cam and crank position sensors. Check the fuel pressure regulator and then the Fuel pump itself. This sounds stupid, but go check the gas cap too and make sure it is on tight. Sometimes it's the little things..haha. The two sensors tell where the crank and cam are in relation to each other and TDC of Piston 1. If one of the sensors is out of whack...the whole timing process will be thrown off. Most of the time if the cam sensor is bad, the car won't start, if the crank, it will start but run like ****. They don't cost much usually and your car is old enough that they should be replaced anyway. The MAF sensor would just cause the car to run rough most of the time if it were faulty or dirty. But being how generalized those codes are, it's never fun to figure out. Hope this helps you :)

Car smells like gas and has trouble starting

This sounds like your evaporative emissions system acting up. Has the check engine light come on? There should be a charcoal cannister that filters the vented air/fumes from the fuel tank. If a vacuum or vapor line is broken, or removed.. or if the charcoal canister is depleted, you'll get the gas smell.

Flooding out. using lots of fuel. black smoke

you could have a bad injector spider if the truck is vortec,if not look to the idle air control valve if this part is bad it won't get the right amount of air and flood the truck out, hints why you are smelling fuel, also look at to o2 sensor if this is bad the computer won't adjust the timing another reason you're smelling fuel . hope this helps you and good luck!

93 5.7 blazer, flooding, getting too much gas

you need to replace the fuel pressure regualtor underneath the plenum , ck fuel pressure if it drops suddenly after you shut the engine down suspect fuel regualtor , use to have to replace the whole spider assembly now i think you can just replace the regulator
