I have a Chevy 2500 pick up truck. My son thought he'd replace the spark plugs. He removed the distributor cap, didn't understand it and now the truck won't start. He did not replace any spark plugs.

Firing order for 5.7 v8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 mostly all of the chevy v8s are the same firing order. the rotor button in distributer turns clockwise, the cylinder numbers are 1-3-5-7 on drivers side, 2-4-6-8 is on passengers side. To get started get your distrutor cap[new one] look on the top you will see a #1that's where you begin you must know if if rotates clockwise or counter clockwise start in that direction then follow the firing order and cylinder line up. good-day!! if cap is not marked, just pull out #1 plug, put a straw or similar in plug hole on top of piston. turn engine over by crank in front of vehicle with a wrench, when the piston comes to the very top just before it starts going down. this is tdc. and rotor button should be pointing to #1 wire on dist, cap. follow from there. good-day !!

How to replace rotor

you might check were your spark plug wires are going to on my 1987 chevy cavalier I found that I had a solid state system in the drivers side of the engine block so there was not distributor cap or access to a rotor because they didn't exist. if you year of Cavalier has a distributor the rotor is under the distributor cap. Replace cap and rotor at same time if one is worn out so is the other. if you have the solid state system take it to the dealer

1997 mazda 626 won't start.

Are the plugs wet with fuel?
Check for spark. No spark? it may be the ignition module.

Plugs dry and spark present? No fuel?Spray a little starting fluid and see if it will run on that.
Then check pump fuses and for fuel pump noise.

No spark

well you didn't say what year it was , keeping that in mind I will try to respond with the info you did give. Generally the Chevy G20 vans have a coil mounted in the distributor itself, so having spark comming from the coil would mean it is not flowing through the rotor to the plug wires..... not sounding right to me either,... Possibly just a bad Distributor cap unless you have already replaced it. So I would have you look at the Ignition module first and the pick up coil second.. not mush else it could be ( ruling out a broken timing chain ) If it is a newer vehicle , it may have a crank position sensor failing or ecm.

1999 chevy pick up 1500 series 4x4 has spark getting fuel new crank position sensor back fires through throttle body wont start

the back firing sounds like to me that the spark plug wires are not in right position on distributor cap, firing on wrong cylinder, did you remove distributor or distributor cap?
