Sometimes, there is a red or red/gray tracer lead on the passenger side that is not connected to anything. This is known as the "fuel pump prime" lead and it can also be used to determine operating condition of the pump if needed. Connect the lead to the positive terminal of the battery through a 10amp fused jumper wire. With the fuel line disconnected, fuel should begin to come out at a pretty good rate. If it doesn't, then determine why. If it does, then you have found the correct lead. Continue to run the pump until the tank is almost empty. Stop the pump, put in a few gallons of fresh fuel and run the pump again until the fuel coming out looks and smells like fresh fuel. Reconnect the line, install a new fuel filter and try to start the engine. It might still run a little rough at first until the fresh fuel gets completely through the system. I hope you find that lead and good luck to you. thanks for trying FixYa.
I WOULD JUST REPLACE THE PUMP AND GET A WET DRY VACC TO **** OUT THE OLD GAS.THE PUMP COMES OUT THE TOP OF THE FILLER NECK.REMOVE THE LID OR THE COVER,, THEN THERE IS A BUNCH OF 10MIL BOLTS AND SOME GAS LINES TO DISCONNECT.ITS PROBABLY ALL RUSTY AND THE FUEL GAUGE DOESNT WORK AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.I WOULD GET A USED UNIT ON EBAY.
