I usually use the shifting capability of automatic transmissions when i want to use it for situations like going into a tight curve, a soft hill etc.
I am comparing the performance of 2002 jetta auto xmssn with my 1998 corolla and when I perform the manual shifting, the engagement is usually performing like I was with a manual transmission. However on my 2002 jetta, the shifting is very spongy and not crisp. Even the use of the gas pedal to demand the shifting is rather spongy and slow. Is this a typical performance for this model?

My 2002 Jetta TDI will not always go into reverse. When this happens I put it in 1st then back to reverse and many times it goes right in reverse. It happens whether it is cold or warmed.

I had the same problem. The transmission would not upshift into 3rd or 4th and 2nd seemed to rev on forever. I replaced the ignition and coil wires as well as the distributor cap and rotor and that fixed the problem. There was obviously some defect in the wires and/or cap/rotor. Although i am not a mechanic, I would say that since the transmission is electronically controlled, due to the defect in the above parts, the voltages going to the cylinders and thus the rev voltage limit load was not being reached or seen by the computer and so was not allowing the upshift. Since this was an ignition problem, I would check the coil as well.

The tranny's are notorious for having "small" problems before they actually let go. However, there is a sensor on the transmission that tells it when to shift as well as a couple of air and cooling sensors. Try having those tested/changed and see if that helps. If not, you may be looking at a new transmission

U would gain about 1-2 miles per gallon, but the change over would cost $1000's

You have the infamous Volkswagen 01M automatic transmission. Rumor is, every single one of these tranny's will fail -it's only a matter of time. You may not necessarily need a new or rebuilt tranny. Do some searching at www.tdiclub.com - there's a ton of info over there - those guys are extremely knowledgeable.

I also have a 2002 Jetta TDI. When trying to accelerate, it does not seem to wan to get out of first gear. In other words, seems like a dog.
