Tip & How-To about Honda Accord

How to check if alternator is charging.

With the car running check the voltage at the battery. The voltge should be 13 volts or more. !3.5 13.6 etc. If the voltage is 12.6 or below. Then it is not charging. Over 15 volts or higher means the regulator is overvcharging!! which can damaged the battery or even explode!

Air Bag Deployment Circuit Drop in Battery Voltage

Circuit Description

Normal Operation

The diagnostic monitor measures the voltage at pin 13 of the diagnostic monitor connector. Voltage at pin 13 should be equal to battery voltage. If the voltage measured at pin 13 drops to less than 9 volts, the diagnostic monitor will flash out code 12.

Possible Causes

A drop in battery voltage at diagnostic monitor pin 13 can be caused by:

1.An open circuit that would prevent battery voltage from reaching diagnostic monitor pin 13.

NOTE:
If the instrument panel fuse and/or the power distribution fuse are blown, be sure to diagnose the system for possible causes 2 and 3 below.

2.A short to ground in Circuit 611 (W/O) or 612 (P/O) may result in a blown instrument panel fuse and/or power distribution fuse.

3.An internal short to ground within the safing sensor may result in a blown instrument panel fuse and/or power distribution fuse.

4.A problem in the charging system causing battery voltage to drop below 9 volts.

I have a thought you may try testing your battery voltage with the car turned off .It should read 12 volts or higher if not charge battery than check again if battery is lower than 12 volts after charging replace battery. If 12 volts or higher start engine check voltage on battery again it should be 13 volts to 14.5 volts not higher if voltage readings are lower than 13 volts or higher than 14.5 volts replace alternator.

Try your alternator check it with a volt meter to see if it is charging the battery. Check the wiring make sure there is no wires of or lose or broken.

battery is bad! check this: when car is running the battery voltage should be at least 14.3 volts or a little higher. when engine is off battery voltage should be at least 13 volts, if the voltage going into battery is below 14 volts when running then alternator is bad. if it is ok then battery needs replaced,

ok, I just got a new battery and coil ignition bwd.I also had my alternator re-built about 2 weeks ago,but my battery light still pops on when i turn the headlights on!my belts seem to be tight enuf. is it a problem that im just running off of the 2 main belts instead of all 3 or 4? the car is an 86 chrysler fifth avenue!

if you have a multi meter,
check voltage at battery with car running, should be at least 13-14 volts,
now turn on fan motor to high, flashers on,radio on, and check voltage at battery, regulator should have adjusted voltage to handle the load, should still be 13-14 volts,
now turn all that stuff off,and turn on headlights and recheck battery voltage,if below 13-14 volts replace regulator,if voltage is spiking higher than 14volts replace regulator.you do not need other belts.
