If the check engine light is on simply drive to your nearest auto parts store and they will perform a free diagnostic. The code can be read with a tool called an On Board Diagnostic Tool, OBD1, 2, or 3 for short. In my area I use Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Napa Auto Parts, and Advance Auto Parts. Most Auto parts store will scan you codes for free. They have the ability to give much more information than just watching the blinking lights.

Not enough info yet. Have you tried pulling the codes, that should help give an indication of where the problem is occurring. Take it by an autozone and they can tell you if the ecu has captured any fault codes.

Read the diagnostic connectror to see if the key code isn't located there.

You are not going to do any harm mixing. The only thing is, if you are going to fill with nitrogen, if you have to fill up with air in an emergency, get the nitrogen refilled at your earliest convienence. Why pay the money and waste it. It shows here you are inquiring with an SUV. I wouldn't bother. If you had a sports car of some sort that you wanted to increase handling charactoristics, I would say go for it. With an SUV just keep the tires rotated(every oil change is pretty convienant since it is already in the shop), double check your tire pressure every week or 2, keep the vehicle aligned every 6 months, and every 2nd oil change, have them check for proper wheel balance(it changes as tires wear).

The lamp, or the entire housing? The lamp is tight, but not hard. It is under the rubber cap on the back of the housing. It's tight with other items, but it can be done without removing anything. Unplug the lamp, remove the rubber cap, release the wire bail, and remove the lamp. The housing is a major pain. You need to remove the grille and the trim strip that runs under the headlights and grille. It is retained by a couple of hidden plastic clips at each end, you need a pair of small screwdrivers to depress the locking pins to release them. Wrap the screwdrivers so you don't mar the paint. Once that is out of the way, work around the housing and remove any bolts attaching it, then work the housing out of the fender.

I would need visuals of the valve body, and for that year rav4 they are getting over on you with the price of the transmission. The ECM replacment would have been the first thing I would have done, as the the ECM controls all the valve servos in the valve body. most of the time it's not the body that goes bad but the servos or the wiring. But in your case, 99.9% positive your ECM shift control programming has gone bad.
