Accelerator needs pumping 3 times to start when
Yeah, you have a blaster, I means a leaky oil valve seal and when turning it of after driving you can rev the engine up a bit then immediately turn ignition off, this will leave enough fuel in fuel line when started the next day. Good?

check your fuses first
check your ignition coil for burn or crack

if you buy the igniter and the coil separate it will end up cost you more and you don't have good warranty
I have a 1989 Toyota Corolla, 5 speed manual;
I would look at the fuel delivery system. Change the fuel filter if it hasn't been done lately. Also get the fuel pressure checked. I don't have the specs but it could be that your fuel pump is getting worn and occasionally has trouble pumping enough fuel to the carb. It's also possible that your carb may need to be overhauled. They do wear and get build up in the pasages over time. Also check to see if your warm air valve in the air cleaner is working. It is possible that your carb is icing up in the cold weather and it is more likely to happen at highway speed.
If you need to get the carb overhauled take it to a shop that specializes in this type of work. You will be glad you did when you get it back.
Hope this helps.
How to change a starter motor on a 1989 Toyota
Hi you did not say what engine or model but based on a 1.3 12v remove disconnect the battery black (negative terminal) then the air filter housing on top with a wing nut.
then you have the carb underneeth it you can remove this to make access easier label all of the vacum hoses etc. and remove the carb by removing four bolts at all four corners at the base of the carberetor.
the starter is at the back of the engine underneeth the manifold undo the solenoid (one bolt with a wire connected) undo the bolts for the starter sorry cant remember how many. you may need to give it some gentle persuasion with a copper hammer. remove and replace.
Wanna change the engine in my ae92 corolla.
There are many different types of 4a engines including 4a 4af 4age 4agze but the 5a is a 1.5 8v engine the 4a is a 1.6 usually a 16v. a 4age is a 1.6 16v gti engine that produces 129bhp depending on year later models had a little more. both engines are fuel injected and were produced for roughly the same period of time. from my experience a 4age goes on for ever. hope this helps
Defective tachometer and speedometer
Do the following:1)key in the ON position:remove the 7.5 gauge fuse.Tach needle should read "0:". 2)put it back,go on the engine and unplug the green plug on the igniter -the big one,with 5 or 6 wires on it.The needle on tach reading should be zero.If not you have a short circuit on the black wire between that plug and the plug on the conbination meter.3) If the reading is zero with the plug disconnected,the black wire for the tach is short-circuited inside the igniter. I have one available.email
