Your engine is probably an EJ-DE twin cam 12 valve.

Generally Daihatsu belts have marks on them that line up with dimples on the sprockets for the intial phasing. You rotate the engine to top dead centre on No1 piston and install the belt from there. The cams should be not be putting any pressure on the intake and exhaust valves of No1 when phased correctly.

Get a compatible aftermarket fuel pump that matches or exceeds the pressure and flow of the factory pump. Look up compatible fuel pumps in google for your year make and model.

Ck the battery ground at the battery & where it grounds to the car. CK The battery cables themselves too

This is one of those unsolved mysteries which is known to afflict Charade owners. By the time you go looking for the problem, the engine decides to behave.

The usual supects are: burned or improprely gapped points, faulty supressor, corroded distributer cap and leads, faulty hot idle compensator, overheated ignition coil, fuel filter, bad spark plugs.

You have a timing problem. Check for loose/broken belts. also see if the distributer cap is worn out or cracked. Replace it if it looks worn out. Change spark plugs....
Sounds like a typical ignition problem. If your handy, you can do this all yourself.
Change plugs wires and distruber cap.

check wiring going to the coil..has it had a new coil fitted?have you checked the electronic ignition?re-wire it from the rev guage backwards towards the coil.. replacing any old wiring is the way forward..
