I found a white washer - about 1/2 inch thick -

I cannot specifically answer what the washer is for, but washers are utilized when tightening the screw or bolt and space needs to be filled, especially to obtain a tighter torque, but if the screw/bolt threads down tight and fine, and with the correct torque, then you should be okay. On another note, there is a headlight recall for 2005 MINI's. You can find the number to call and details at automotive.com Here is another source for recalls being developed and issues to possibly expect:

Broken front fog light

There is a recall on headlights for 2005 MINIS, but I also know that the front fog light issue is prevalent, so DOT (888) 327-4236 SHOULD BE NOTIFIED AND MINI USA at: 1 866-MINI USA. Are you asking how to replace the fog light? There are also manuals available for each car with detailed guides on maintenance so you can learn your own vehicle and do it yourself, or safeguard yourself from being overcharged by mechanics. I hope this helps somewhat for you! Look here. A few people have had this issue and also have it relate to further issues. They are working towards a recall.

Mini Cooper convertible is overheating, fan contiues after stop

I had this exact same problem -- for about a year and a half! Replaced thermostat, replaced sensor twice, replaced overflow tank, replaced radiator cap, placed a grounding kit on the car in case the problem was electrical ... and was ABOUT to replace thermostat again and then the water pump when a new mechanic suggested we bleed air out of the cooling system. The heater core was PACKED with air, as was the upper hose valve area. Previous mechanic had been using a pressurized fill device to bleed the system and this had just been backing air into the heater core. There are two valves under the hood for bleeding air -- one on the heater core and one on the upper hose. It only takes a few minutes to fix this!

See if you can find the schematics (a wiring diagram for your entire car, or simply the component involved.) You can then use a multimeter and check each wire for a short.

2005 mini cooper has loud

I had a similar issue and it ended up being a broken wheel bearing. I even ended up having two, one was broken on my front passenger side, and one broken on my rear driver side. The part costs about $280.00, but could cost around $400.00 with service repair. The noise of a broken wheel bearing can sound like a humming, and over time it becomes louder. The car can be driven with a broken wheel bearing, but doing so can eventually lead to other wheel/tire maintenance. MINI's endure this commonly due to their low profile to the ground. Here is a forum on further issues experienced, including the bearing, and efforts towards recalls. http://newmini.wordpress.com/2009/02/17/mini-cooper-power-steering-failure/#comment-884

Where does the battery go in a 2005 mini cooper s

In the S model it's in the boot under the floor mat.
In the standard model it's under the bonnet on the left sidr of the car (US Drivers side) You'll see the cables going into the plastic battery box.

Can't open drivers side door from the inside, this

sounds like the mechanical linkage that connects the inside lever to the lock assembly is loose or disconnected. Remove the door panel and see if this is the case. I have seen plastic levers break not visible without disassembly

I have a 2005 mini cooper with build in dvd

You can try to disconnect the battery to the car for 5 minutes. This will reset all functions for the stereo. You will have to go to the dealership to get a new one. Or you can go buy an aftermarket one at any stereo shop.

Soft top wont open

Many reasons...here's the most common:
1. the two latches on either side of your real shelf (Above the trunk (Boot) space. Unlatch and re-latch them firmly.
2. Make sure the rear shelf id down firmly Sometimes those switches don't engage.
3. (This one got me) If you had a dead battery or had battery disconnected for any reason, cycle all the windows up and down a couple of times then try the top.

Remote would not unlock car

Call around for a locksmith. The remote needs to be programed, then you can use that to de-activate the alarm. What does your key look like? Can you email, or post a picture of your remote and key?

Check fuse 18 first then and then fuse 40.

These 2 fuse's are what controls the seat belt and warning systems.

Let me know if these are ok, and I will give you more information, which is a bit more indepth.

Thanks

I can not get into my 2005 mini cooper the key

Hi. Try to test the battery using a voltmeter. It might not be the battery that is having the problem. You can also test it by honking your horn if nothing comes up then its the best way to start the troubleshooting by replacing the battery or have it recharged.
