Noise when accelerating

a drive belt may be loose or going bad! you can buy a can of belt dressing at any auto parts store. just spray on drive side of pulleys while running. if belt is slipping on pulley, it will calm down. but if it does not stop making noise, replace belt or tighten it. be very carefull when car is running. good-day!

Car gave several coughs at 60 plus yesterday then seemed to clear today had spate of 10 / 12 coughs and splutters during which the engine light came on and the battery light ... changed down gear to 2

Depending on the mileage of the vehicle sounds like the timing belt has stretched. If the coughing is when you give it gas but not when it is not under load timing belt would be my guess. Good luck and drive safe.

Low beam headlight stays on permantly

Could be that the low beam relay is stuck. If you can locate the relay usually in a fuse box in engine compartment ,remove it and see if lights go out.
