It could be anything from a simple short in the wiring, A faulty switch to something more serious in the vehicle's ECU. Have you had the vehicle scanned for trouble codes? Might try operating the handle and manually flipping the latch. Many times older springs can wear and break to where there isn't anything to move the latch to the open position by itself. If you can manually open the latch and get it to latch on the striker, you probably are missing a spring inside the door on the latch itself.
