the front of hte engine faces the passenger side fender. The tensioner is an automatic tensioner. You put a 1/2 socket in the square hole to rotate it to relieve tension and take the belt off.

It definitely sounds like your TPS needs to be cleaned first and then go from there. It's possibly an EGR problem as well. When is the last time the car was tuned up? Once you clean the TPS you should notice an improvement. Let me know if you need further assistance after you try these "free" steps. Then you may have to consider replacing some parts from there. Have you ever replaced the spark plug wires and the distributor cap and rotor? If not then do that and pull a spark plug and see if the electrodes are worn out. I assume this is a very high mile vehicle due to the extreme age and it is a Ford.

I think you need a diagnostic computer or even a code reader before you can use a repair manual.

From the center it could be a leaking freeze plug in the block, or one of the heater hoses. You'll need to investigate further.
