Once you remove the bolt the balancer should slide right out.

Ok it seen that u having problems to break loose u crank shast pulley bolt if u don't have the proper tools to get it loose, I will suggest to do this but you goin to be carefull how to do it. Get a good side breaker bar with the sucket that fit in the bolt connect the battery back is possible that you have everything disconected but go head and install the battery cable back, with the braker bar find a spot to put the breaker bar agians too. Have somebody to go inside of the car to just try to bump the engine wich mean with the ignition switch try to start the car make sure u have the breaker bar set up to the left not to right possition(lefty loosy and righty tighty) and it will break loose

No the check engine light has to do with a sensor problem mostly,Or on that old of a car yhey will come on all so if some vacum hose is off or develop a leak. How many miles are on thecar? Has it ever been Fully tune u?, Putting new (Spark) Plugs end wires on it, I hate to tell you that your (Problem) Can lead to a lot of different things.If it is a high mileledge car. did you check the igniter in the distributor? they are known to fail on hondas.

1991 civic, does not use a transponder. Those didn't come until 96 and later civics

You will need to remove the back seats and you will see the fuel pump in between the back seats and trunk. Run the car, remove the fuel pump fuse to relieve the pressure and then the car will die. Remove the pipes to the fuel pump, replace it and refit the pipes. Pump the gas pedal a few times and start it up (remember the fuse!)

If it is inside the tank (the fuel pump), then you will see the tank is held on by straps. Take them off, have ajack under it and remove the filler neck and screws holding it to the car. Remove the tank, undo the central bit where wires and pipes come out and slide the fuel pump out, replace what you have just done and refit.

The relay is located in the same spot on all models from 1988-1992 sold in the States. On the left side of the dash is a change, etc. fold out compartment. I have found it is easier to reach the relay if that is removed (couple of small screws, bolts). The relay is basically tucked up under the left side of the bottom of the dash. There should be a shift interlock located in front or around the shifter, remove the little plastic cover and try inserting your key to diable the shift lock this is a safety feature that only lets the car go into gear with your foot depressed on the brake, sometimes doing this will enable your to shift the car into gear and reset it, hope this helps.

Check your fuel pressure and plug wires,. The smell is unburned gasoline from an engine misfire.
