What does "service" light mean?
The service light comes on every 5000 miles to remind you to change the oil & check fluids. It is reset with a special tool that connects to the OBDII connector.

turn the key switch to the run position and then turn the blinker on on the side thats freezeing and do a walk around the car checking the corosponding lights to the side that is on and froze. first check the bulb in the light thatis not on on the side that should be blinking. If thats not the problem then you have a bad ground on the system and you will probably have to add a ground wire to the side thats frozen but first check the bulbs!

I think I would check the thermostat. You can buy one that opens sooner..Like yours might open at 180...but you can buy them to open at 160....Flush your radiator..Might not be circulating good..cat converter could be slowing clogging causing pressure back tour you motor...Car will start back firing sometimes..loose acceleration... That's my list
What oil should I use
We don't usually recommend a brand on fixya, so if it does not have synthetic oil now, any good quality 5w30 or 10w30 should do.
What does the yellow arrow flashing on the dash mean on a 98 s90 volvo
That generally means the transmission, and most likely the PNP switch are malfunctioning.
You can typically limp it along by pushing the button on the shifter and moving it from "1" to "P" back and forth a few times in rapid succession, but ultimately you need to replace the PNP switch.
The OEM switch is about $170 and the aftermarket part is about $70. For this sort of thing, I'd use the more expensive factory part.
They're available at FCPGroton, IPDUSA and eEuroparts and other places.

Could I bend valves just by cranking an engine?
Yes it is a possibility to bend the valves, but I really think it is of timing. I would take the belt off but leave the pullys and gears, then align each camshaft to it's mark and do the same for the crank. Put the belt back on and tighten it then try turning it over with a socket on the crank and see how it feels before trying with the battery. You should have better results.John
