Volvo XC70 2002. Engine starting difficulties

The Volvo mechanic may be right. That does sound like the symptoms of a "dragging" starter-one that may have a worn bushing allowing the starter motor to move around too much inside the starter case. My only other thought would be a timing belt off by a tooth or two. If the engine runs well and smooth and has good power and acceleration, however, I think you could rule out a camshaft timing problem. A rebuilt starter or one from a salvage yard would be half the cost of a new starter, and maybe 1/3 or 1/4 the cost of a Volvo dealership starter. Are the parts as expensive as I have been led to believe? As to your concern about the cranking damaging the car, I would not be too concerned. Only operate the starter for no longer than 10-15 seconds at a time, then let it cool down a couple of minutes before trying again. You won't damage the car, you will only shorten the starter's already short life. Once you have the problem fixed, have the oil and filter changed, in case all that cranking let unburned gas slip down the cylinder walls and into the crankcase, thinning out the oil.
